Wallpaper Hanging across the West Midlands

Wallpaper exposes a wall completely. Every hollow, every old skim line and every damp patch shows through a modern non-woven paper, which is why preparation is most of the labour and almost all of the difference between a professional finish and a peeling seam.

We prepare first — old paper stripped properly, walls washed, filled and sanded, and sized or lined where the substrate demands it — then hang with the paste and technique the paper specifies. Paste-the-wall, traditional paste-the-paper, grasscloth and panel murals all behave differently, and treating them the same is how patterns drift.

Typical jobs across the region are single feature walls in living rooms and bedrooms, nursery murals, full-room heritage papers in period homes, and lining paper over tired plaster before painting.

The single biggest variable in a wallpapering quote here is not the paper, it is what is already on the wall. Woodchip over lath, three layers of 1980s vinyl, or a blown skim over lime plaster each add a day and each change how the finish paper has to be hung.

We survey before quoting and price the preparation honestly, including it as a separate line so you can see what you are paying for. A quote that ignores preparation is not cheaper — it just moves the cost to the point where the seams open.

How it works in the West Midlands

  1. Step 1

    Send us the details

Tell us the number of rooms, what matters most and how we get in. Access quirks in the West Midlands are worth mentioning now: they change the time on site more than the floor area does.

  2. Step 2

    We price it in writing

You get a written figure for wallpaper hanging, itemised, normally within a few hours. No survey fee, and no surcharge for travelling to the West Midlands.

  3. Step 3

    Pick your slot

Choose a morning or afternoon window. We plan around the West Midlands traffic and parking so the crew arrives inside it.

  4. Step 4

    Finished and signed off

Work runs to the written spec, and the job isn't closed until it has been checked against it. If something on the list was missed, we return and put it right free.

What's included

  • Full preparation

Old paper stripped, walls washed, filled, sanded and sized — the stage most DIY jobs skip.

  • Lining where needed

Cross-lined over uneven period plaster so the finish paper hangs flat and seams stay closed.

  • Pattern matched precisely

Drop and repeat set out before the first length, with the pattern centred on the focal point of the room.

  • Any paper type

Paste-the-wall, traditional, grasscloth, vinyl, heritage and panel murals, each hung to its own method.

  • Cut-ins and obstacles

Sockets, switches, rads, coving and picture rails cut in cleanly rather than papered around.

  • Clean finish

Dust-sheeted throughout, waste bagged and removed, room left usable the same day.

  • Woodchip and vinyl removal

Multi-layer stripping, including steam removal from lath and plaster without blowing the skim.

  • Damp and salt checks before hanging

Meter readings on chimney breasts and external walls, so paper is not hung over an active problem.

Local knowledge that changes the job

Period plaster across the region

Victorian and Edwardian homes in Moseley, Handsworth, Harborne, Leamington Spa and Warwick have lime plaster on lath, often with a thin gypsum skim added in the 1980s. It is rarely flat, frequently hollow in patches, and will pull away if paper is hung on it without cross-lining first.

We tap-test the wall before quoting. Where the skim has blown we cut it back and make good rather than papering over it — a repair that costs an hour and saves the whole wall lifting in six months.

New-build board and drying-out cracks

On newer estates around Dickens Heath, Monkspath, Longbridge and the Coventry fringe the walls are plasterboard with a thin skim, which is flat but very absorbent. Those need sizing or a mist coat before paper, otherwise the paste dries too fast and the seams open.

New-builds also settle for the first two years, and hairline cracking at board joints is normal. A flexible lining paper handles that movement far better than hanging a heavy paper straight onto fresh skim.

Chimney breasts, salts and the stain that returns

Papering a chimney breast in a Victorian or Edwardian home across Handsworth, Small Heath or Foleshill is the job most likely to come back. Decades of combustion leave hygroscopic salts in the brickwork, which pull moisture out of the air and push a brown stain through emulsion and paper alike.

The fix is a salt-neutralising primer or a re-plaster with a renovating mix, not a heavier paper. We meter-test the breast and tell you which of those it needs before hanging anything — papering straight over it wastes the paper and the labour.

Stairwells in three-storey terraces

The region's tall Victorian terraces and townhouses — Edgbaston, Leamington, parts of Wolverhampton — have stairwell walls running two full storeys, and those cannot be papered off a ladder safely or accurately. Drops of four metres or more need a stair platform or a tower, and matching a pattern down that height needs two people.

We price stairwells as their own item because of that access, and we set out from the top so the pattern break, where one is unavoidable, lands behind the handrail line rather than at eye level.

Heritage papers and conservation areas

Bournville, the Jewellery Quarter, Warwick town centre and much of central Leamington sit in conservation areas with a strong stock of period interiors, and we get regular requests for heritage and reproduction papers in those homes. Those papers are usually paste-the-paper, often untrimmed, and completely unforgiving of a modern non-woven technique.

They also demand cross-lining almost without exception. We hang them the way the manufacturer specifies — soaked to the stated time, butt-jointed rather than rolled hard, and set out so the repeat centres on the fireplace or the bay.

When the job is a move, not a fixing

Plenty of wallpaper hanging enquiries start as something else — a house move, a store collection or an office change. These pages price that side of the work properly rather than squeezing it into an hourly handyman slot.

Every removal service we run in the region is listed on West Midlands moving services, and the fixing side sits on West Midlands handyman services.

Most jobs in the region touch more than one trade — a tenancy clean before a move, an assembly visit after a delivery, or an office contract that needs both. These hubs price each side properly.

Wallpaper Hanging in the West Midlands — FAQs

Q1.How much does wallpapering cost in the West Midlands?

A single prepared feature wall starts at £90, a panel mural at £140, a full standard room at £320 and cross-lining a room at £220. Prices exclude the paper itself, which you can supply or we can order.

Q2.Do I need lining paper?

On the region's period lime plaster, usually yes — cross-lining gives the finish paper a flat, even-absorbency surface and stops seams opening. On flat modern board, sizing is often enough.

Q3.Can you strip the old wallpaper?

Yes, and we prefer to. Hanging over existing paper is the most common cause of bubbling, because the new paste re-wets the old adhesive underneath.

Q4.How long does a feature wall take?

Typically half a day including preparation. A full room is a day, and a heavily damaged wall needing repair and lining may run to a day and a half.

Q5.Do you hang murals and grasscloth?

Yes. Panel murals are set out and matched across the full run before the first panel goes up, and grasscloth is hung with the paste and butt-jointing technique that material needs — it is unforgiving of the standard method.

Q6.Can you remove woodchip wallpaper?

Yes, from £120 per wall including making good. It is steamed and scraped carefully on lath and plaster so the skim does not blow, then filled and sanded ready for lining or paint.

Q7.Why does a brown stain keep coming through my chimney breast?

Hygroscopic salts left in the brickwork from decades of combustion. They pull moisture from the air and push through any finish. It needs a salt-neutralising primer or a renovating re-plaster — a heavier paper will not hold it back.

Q8.Can you paper a two-storey stairwell?

Yes, from £260 including the stair platform or tower. Drops over four metres need proper access and two people to keep the pattern true, so we price stairwells separately from ordinary rooms.

Q9.Do you hang traditional heritage papers?

Yes, and to their own method — soaked to the stated time, butt-jointed rather than rolled, and cross-lined first. Modern paste-the-wall technique on an untrimmed heritage paper is how patterns drift and edges curl.
