Getting the bed into the room at all
Across the region's Victorian terraces — Small Heath, Sparkbrook, Tipton, Cradley Heath — the staircase turns twice in under two metres and a rigid super-king divan base simply will not go up. The answer is a split base or a frame that assembles in the room, and it is worth knowing before delivery day, not after.
We measure the stair turn and the door swing at booking if you send photos, and can advise whether the bed you have ordered will physically reach the bedroom.
Anchoring bunks and headboards to the wall
Bunk beds and tall loft beds are supplied with a wall-restraint that assumes masonry. In drylined Solihull and Warwickshire new-builds the plasterboard alone will not hold that load, so we locate the studs or use void-spanning anchors into the blockwork behind.
Wall-mounted headboards face the same issue, plus the region's lath-and-plaster first floors in Moseley, Handsworth and Leamington, where the only reliable fixing is into the stud itself.
Ottoman bases and the ceiling above them
An ottoman base lifts to roughly the height of the mattress again, and in the region's older attic conversions and 1930s box rooms — Kingstanding, Wednesfield, Foleshill — the coombed ceiling stops the lid before it reaches full travel. Forced past that point the struts bend and the hinge tears out of the frame.
We measure the swing arc before assembly and, where clearance is tight, orient the base so it opens along the room rather than into the slope. Occasionally the honest answer is that a side-opening base is the wrong product for that room, and we say so before the mattress goes on.
Old mattresses and where they can legally go
Mattresses are the item most often fly-tipped in the West Midlands, and every local authority here treats them as a bulky waste item with its own charge. Noise between floors in converted and terraced homes
