Shelf Installation is available in 62 West Midlands towns
We cover the B, CV, DY, WV, WS, WR postcode areas daily and the wider ST, TF, SY, HR districts on scheduled runs. Same-week slots are usual, next-day is common outside peak weekends, and every job is confirmed in writing with a fixed price before a crew is booked.
Shelf Installation across the West Midlands
Shelving looks like the simplest handyman job and produces the most call-backs, because a shelf's load is entirely a fixing question. A metre of books is roughly 25kg, and plasterboard on its own will not hold that no matter how confident the packaging is.
We detect the substrate and any services first, then choose the fixing: into studs on a partition, void-spanning anchors on dot-and-dab, resin into soft old brick, and heavy-duty anchors for garage and loft racking. Every run is set out with a laser level, not by eye against a ceiling line that is rarely straight.
Alcove shelving in period homes is our most requested version of this job, and also the one where nothing is square — those runs are scribed to the walls individually rather than cut to a single measurement.
The question we ask before any shelving job is what is going on it, because the answer changes the entire specification. A metre of paperbacks is around 25kg, a metre of vinyl records is closer to 50kg, and a run of full paint tins in a garage is heavier again. Fixings are chosen from that number, not from the shelf.
The second question is what is behind the wall. Shelving heights sit exactly where kitchen and bathroom pipe runs, cooker circuits and old rewire cables tend to travel, so every hole is checked with a detector and, where the reading is ambiguous, with a small pilot before the full bore.
What's included
Substrate and services check
Stud, pipe and cable detection before drilling, so a shelf never goes through a hidden cable run.
Laser-levelled runs
Set out from a true level, not from a ceiling or picture rail, which in older homes slopes noticeably.
Load-rated fixings
Fixings chosen for the weight you will actually put on it, and we ask before we start.
Alcove shelving scribed
Each shelf templated to its own alcove — walls in period homes are rarely parallel.
Floating shelf specialists
Concealed-rod shelves fitted so the bracket is properly seated and the shelf does not droop under load.
Garage and loft racking
Heavy-duty shelving anchored into masonry or joists, rated and load-tested.
Load calculated before fixing
We ask what the shelf will carry and specify the anchor to that figure, with the rating stated on the invoice.
Batten-and-board alcove systems
Timber-battened runs for period alcoves where a concealed rod cannot reach a solid substrate.

Local knowledge that changes the job
Alcoves either side of a chimney breast
The classic West Midlands shelving job is a pair of alcoves flanking a chimney breast in a Victorian or Edwardian terrace. Those alcoves are almost never the same width as each other, never square to the breast, and often taper by 10–15mm front to back.
We template each shelf individually rather than cutting a matched pair, which is why our alcove runs sit tight to the plaster with no filler gap. Where the alcove wall is old lath and plaster, battens are fixed into the studs and the shelf carried on those.
Garages, cellars and loft storage
Interwar semis across Erdington, Wednesfield, Bearwood and Coventry have deep garages and generous lofts that people rack out for storage. Garage walls here are often single-skin brick or blockwork, which takes a heavy anchor fine but needs care near the mortar line.
Cellar shelving in the region's Victorian stock is a damp question as much as a fixing one — we use galvanised or treated components and hold shelving off the wall, so stored items are not sitting against cold, damp brick.
Cellar and under-stair storage in Victorian stock
A large share of the region's pre-1919 terraces have a cellar or a deep under-stair void, and both are popular shelving spaces because nothing else fits there. Both are also damp-prone: solid brick below ground with no membrane behind the plaster in most cases.
We hold shelving off the wall on treated battens, use galvanised or stainless fixings, and leave an air gap so stored boxes are not sitting against cold brick. In an under-stair void we also keep clear of the string and any gas or electric meter access, which building regulations and your supplier both care about.
Fixing into no-fines concrete
Coventry, Chelmsley Wood and parts of the Black Country carry a lot of post-war no-fines concrete — cast walls with deliberate voids and no consistent aggregate. It looks solid, drills unpredictably, and crumbles around a standard plug just as the shelf goes under load.
Those walls take a resin anchor, which needs cure time before loading. We plan that into the visit rather than rushing it, and we will not hang a loaded run on a mechanical plug in no-fines because it is only a matter of time before it lets go.
Loft boarding and roof storage
Loft shelving requests across Erdington, Wednesfield, Solihull and the Coventry suburbs almost always follow a loft insulation top-up, and that is the trap: boarding straight onto the joists over 270mm of insulation compresses it and destroys most of its value.
We fit raised loft legs so the boards sit above the insulation, keep loads over the joist line rather than between, and leave eaves ventilation paths clear. Storage that causes condensation in the roof is a worse outcome than no storage.

When the job is a move, not a fixing
Plenty of shelf installation enquiries start as something else — a house move, a store collection or an office change. These pages price that side of the work properly rather than squeezing it into an hourly handyman slot.

Feedback collected after completion and lightly edited for length. Our overall score across all services is 4.5 from 3082 reviews on Trustpilot.
- ★★★★★
Alcoves scribed, not bodged
“Neither alcove is square and neither is the same width. Each shelf was templated and scribed so there's no gap at the back. Looks built-in rather than bought.”
- ★★★★★
Told me the honest load rating
“I wanted floating shelves for a record collection. He measured, worked out what the rods would actually carry into that wall and recommended a heavier fixing. They hold about 40kg with no sag.”
- ★★★★★
Cellar storage that copes with damp
“Old cellar, some moisture in the walls. He used moisture-tolerant fixings and kept the timber off the wall face. Six months in there's no swelling at all.”
Shelf Installation in the West Midlands — FAQs
Q1.How much does shelf fitting cost?
A single shelf starts at £40, a concealed-fixing floating shelf at £55, an alcove run of three to four shelves at £150 and a garage racking bay at £95.
Q2.Can you fit shelves on a plasterboard wall?
Yes, but not into the board alone. We locate and fix into the studs, or use void-spanning anchors into the blockwork behind on dot-and-dab walls. Board-only fixings fail as soon as real weight goes on.
Q3.How much weight will a floating shelf hold?
It depends entirely on the wall and the rod system. On solid masonry a good concealed-rod shelf carries 20–30kg comfortably; on plasterboard alone, far less. Tell us what is going on the shelf and we will spec the fixing to suit.
Q4.Can you build shelving into my alcoves?
Yes, and it is our most common shelving job in period homes. Each shelf is templated to its own alcove because the two sides of a chimney breast are rarely the same width or square.
Q5.Will you avoid pipes and cables?
Always. We scan for pipes, cables and studs before drilling — an essential step in older West Midlands housing, where earlier rewires and central-heating runs often sit in unexpected places.
Q6.How much weight can a floating shelf hold?
It depends entirely on the wall, not the shelf. Into solid brick or a stud, a concealed-rod shelf will carry a full metre of books comfortably. Into plasterboard alone it will carry almost nothing, which is why we ask what is going on it before quoting.
Q7.Can you build a full alcove unit rather than loose shelves?
Yes, from £260 for a battened and boarded full-height unit, scribed to the alcove and left ready for paint. In period homes with lath walls that is usually a better structure than concealed rods.
Q8.Can you shelve a cellar without things going damp?
We hold the shelving off the wall on treated battens with an air gap and use galvanised or stainless fixings. Boxes sitting flat against cold below-ground brick is what causes the damage, and the gap solves most of it.
Q9.Can you board my loft for storage?
Yes, on raised loft legs so the boards sit above the insulation rather than crushing it, with loads kept over the joist line and eaves ventilation left clear.
