Flat-Pack Assembly across the West Midlands

Not every flat-pack is an IKEA flat-pack, and the non-IKEA brands are usually the harder build. Instructions are thinner, cam-lock tolerances are looser, and the hardware pack is often the cheapest part of the product — which is why an experienced fitter with their own screws finishes in half the time.

We assemble whatever arrives: Wayfair and Made bedroom furniture, Argos and Dunelm storage, Oak Furnitureland dining sets, home-office desks, kitchen island units and self-assembly wardrobes.

The fitter arrives with cordless drivers, clamps, a stud and pipe detector, spirit levels and a full range of upgrade fixings, so a unit that ships with soft chipboard screws leaves with fixings that will actually hold under load.

Almost every call-out we take in Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley, Walsall and Wolverhampton comes down to the same two variables: how square the room is, and what the wall is made of. A Victorian Kings Heath bedroom, a 1930s Erdington semi and a 2021 Solihull drylined new-build each need a different fixing for the same wardrobe.

Booking several items into one visit is always the cheaper route. A bedroom set built in one half-day costs less than three separate call-outs, and it lets the fitter square the units against each other rather than one at a time.

How it works in the West Midlands

  1. Step 1

    Start with the property

A few lines is enough to start: rooms, frequency and the the West Midlands street you're on. Anything unusual — a shared stairwell, a key-safe, a dog — is better said up front than discovered on the day.

  2. Step 2

    Get a fixed quote

We price flat-pack assembly in writing, usually the same day, with the labour, materials and disposal all itemised so nothing appears later.

  3. Step 3

    Choose your window

Pick the day and window that suits you. Rounds are built geographically around the West Midlands, which is why the arrival time holds rather than drifting across the day.

  4. Step 4

    We check it with you

You get a finished-work check against the same list you agreed at the start — no vague "all done" message. Anything below standard is re-done at our cost.

What's included

  • Every brand handled

Wayfair, Made, Argos, Dunelm, Habitat, Oak Furnitureland, office and trade flat-pack — no brand surcharge.

  • Hardware upgraded where needed

Soft supplied screws swapped for proper fixings at no cost, so joints stay tight.

  • Levelled and squared

Diagonals checked and feet adjusted before doors and drawers are hung.

  • Wall-fixed for stability

Tall units strapped or bracketed to the wall with the right anchor for your construction.

  • Multi-item visits

A whole bedroom or home office in one booking, priced by the half-day rather than per item.

  • Packaging removed

Cardboard, polystyrene and strapping taken away and recycled.

  • Cable and pipe detection first

Every wall scanned before drilling — essential in the region's older houses where surface-chased cabling is common.

  • Scribed to out-of-square walls

Desks, wardrobes and shelving packed and scribed to walls that run out by 15–20mm, which is normal in pre-war plaster.

Local knowledge that changes the job

Home offices and the region's smaller box rooms

Hybrid working turned the box room of every 1930s semi in Erdington, Wednesfield, Bearwood and Castle Bromwich into a study, and those rooms are typically 2.1m by 2.4m with a bulkhead over the stairs. A corner desk built to the room's actual out-of-square walls, rather than to the diagram, is the difference between usable and blocked.

We routinely scribe desks and shelving to walls that are out by 15–20mm across a two-metre run, which is entirely normal in pre-war West Midlands plaster.

Delivery damage, and checking before we build

The most common non-build failure we see across the region is a panel damaged in transit that only shows once the unit is half assembled. Our fitters lay out and check every panel and the hardware pack before the first screw goes in, and photograph anything damaged so your retailer claim is straightforward.

If a replacement panel is needed we build everything unaffected, leave the room usable, and return to finish at no extra call-out charge once the part lands.

Walls: what you are actually fixing into

The anti-tip strap on a tall wardrobe is only as good as the wall behind it. Solihull, Dickens Heath and Warwickshire new-builds are drylined on dabs, so a plasterboard plug into a 25mm void will pull straight out under load — those need void-spanning anchors or a fixing into the blockwork behind.

Older Black Country and inner-Birmingham stock brings the opposite problem: soft Victorian lime plaster over brick, and first-floor lath and plaster where the only reliable fixing is the stud itself. We scan and test before drilling rather than after.

Landlords, HMOs and student lets

Selly Oak, Edgbaston, Earlsdon and Coventry city centre turn over thousands of furnished rooms every June and September, and landlords in those postcodes book us by the half-day to build desks, wardrobes and bed frames across several rooms at once.

Furniture in a let has to be anchored and stable for the tenancy inspection, so we photograph each anti-tip fixing as it goes in and send the set through with the invoice for the property file.

When it is cheaper to rebuild than replace

A large part of this work is fixing furniture that was assembled once, badly. Stripped cam locks, a wardrobe racked out of square, drawer runners fitted one hole out — none of that needs a new unit, just an hour with the right hardware.

We quote a rebuild from £60 and will tell you plainly when a chipboard carcass has gone too far to save, rather than charging you to prop up something that will fail again in a month.

What to have ready for your Flat-Pack Assembly job

List the items and roughly how many boxes there are. Multiple items in one visit is always the cheaper way to book.

Have this ready — What needs building, and how many boxes? — and the quote comes back with a firm price rather than a range.

Weekday replies land within one working hour. Nothing is booked and no deposit is taken until the price is confirmed in writing.

  1. 1Count the cartonsBox count predicts time far better than item count — a wardrobe can be one box or four.

  3. 3Photograph any damage nowWe document it too, but early photos strengthen your supplier claim.

When the job is a move, not a fixing

Plenty of flat-pack assembly enquiries start as something else — a house move, a store collection or an office change. These pages price that side of the work properly rather than squeezing it into an hourly handyman slot.

Every removal service we run in the region is listed on West Midlands moving services, and the fixing side sits on West Midlands handyman services.

Most jobs in the region touch more than one trade — a tenancy clean before a move, an assembly visit after a delivery, or an office contract that needs both. These hubs price each side properly.

Why choose Hello Services in the West Midlands

Flat-pack assembly is only worth booking if the crew turns up, prices honestly and finishes the spec. These are the commitments we hold ourselves to in the West Midlands.

  • £5m public liability cover

Every job in the West Midlands is insured to £5m public liability, with goods-in-transit cover on anything we lift, load or take away.

  • Fixed prices, confirmed in writing

You get the flat-pack assembly price in writing before we start. Access, stair turns and parking are priced in up front, not added afterwards.

  • Local scheduling, not a call centre

Slots are planned around the West Midlands traffic, permit zones and parking realities, so crews arrive inside the window we promised.

  • Re-do guarantee

If anything on the flat-pack assembly spec is missed, we come back and put it right at no extra cost — that is the whole guarantee.

Flat-Pack Assembly in the West Midlands — FAQs

Q1.Do you assemble furniture from any retailer?

Yes — Wayfair, Made, Argos, Dunelm, Habitat, Oak Furnitureland, office suppliers and trade flat-pack. There is no brand surcharge and no need to have bought it anywhere in particular.

Q2.How much does flat-pack assembly cost?

A single small item starts at £45, a desk or dining set at £70, a three-piece bedroom set at £150 and a full-day two-fitter fit-out at £280. Booking multiple items into one visit is always cheaper than separate call-outs.

Q3.What if the supplied screws are poor quality?

We swap them for proper fixings from the van at no extra cost. Cheap chipboard screws stripping in soft board is the single most common reason a flat-pack unit loosens within a year.

Q4.Can you build furniture that arrived damaged?

We check every panel before starting and photograph any transit damage for your retailer claim. We then build everything unaffected and return free of charge to finish once the replacement panel arrives.

Q5.Will you take the packaging away?

Yes, cardboard, polystyrene and strapping are removed and recycled as part of the job.

Q6.Can you anchor a wardrobe to a plasterboard wall?

Yes. In drylined Solihull and Warwickshire new-builds we use void-spanning anchors or fix through to the blockwork behind, because a standard plug into a dab void will not hold an anti-tip strap under load.

Q7.Can you fix furniture someone else assembled badly?

Yes, and it is a common booking. Stripped cam locks, racked carcasses and drawer runners fitted a hole out are usually a one-hour rebuild from £60 rather than a replacement.

Q8.Do you work for landlords across several rooms?

Yes. HMO and student-let owners in Selly Oak, Edgbaston and Earlsdon typically book a half or full day to build multiple rooms at once, and we photograph each anti-tip fixing for the property file.
