Carpet Fitting is available in 62 West Midlands towns
We cover the B, CV, DY, WV, WS, WR postcode areas daily and the wider ST, TF, SY, HR districts on scheduled runs. Same-week slots are usual, next-day is common outside peak weekends, and every job is confirmed in writing with a fixed price before a crew is booked.
Carpet Fitting across the West Midlands
Carpet fitting is a craft job that looks straightforward until you meet a real staircase. A West Midlands Victorian or Edwardian stair with winders at the turn needs each tread cut individually; a landing that reads square on paper is often out by 20mm across its length.
We uplift the old floorcovering, punch down or re-nail loose boards, fit new gripper and underlay and stretch the carpet properly with a knee kicker and power stretcher so it does not ripple in a year. Doors are trimmed to the new height and thresholds finished neatly at every change of floor.
The old carpet, underlay and gripper leave with us under our waste-carrier licence, which matters here because most West Midlands councils charge for bulky waste collection and several Household Recycling Centres restrict van access without a permit.
Carpet fitting is judged at the edges: the doorway bars, the stair nosings and the line where the carpet meets a chimney breast. All of those are cutting and finishing skills, and all of them are where a rushed fit becomes obvious within a month.
The other half of the job is the subfloor. The region's housing runs from Victorian floorboards with 10mm gaps, through 1930s boarded floors, to modern chipboard and screeded concrete, and each needs a different preparation before underlay goes anywhere near it.
How it works in the West Midlands
- Step 1
Send us the details
Tell us the number of rooms, what matters most and how we get in. Access quirks in the West Midlands are worth mentioning now: they change the time on site more than the floor area does.
- Step 2
We price it in writing
You get a written figure for carpet fitting, itemised, normally within a few hours. No survey fee, and no surcharge for travelling to the West Midlands.
- Step 3
Pick your slot
Choose a morning or afternoon window. We plan around the West Midlands traffic and parking so the crew arrives inside it.
- Step 4
Job done and checked
The team works to the agreed spec, walks the finished work with you and only closes the job once you're happy. Anything missed, we come back.
What's included
Old floorcovering uplifted
Carpet, underlay, gripper and staples removed, and loose boards re-fixed before anything new goes down.
New gripper and underlay
Gripper set to the correct gap and underlay taped at the joints so it cannot shift under the carpet.
Properly stretched
Knee-kicked and power-stretched so the carpet stays flat — ripples a year later are a stretching failure, not a wear issue.
Stairs and winders
Each tread and winder cut and fitted individually, with the pile direction kept consistent down the flight.
Doors trimmed and thresholds fitted
Doors eased to the new height and metal or timber thresholds finished at every floor change.
Waste taken away
Old carpet, underlay and gripper removed under our waste-carrier licence — no council bulky-waste booking needed.
Subfloor prepared first
Boards screwed down, gaps hardboarded or ply-lined, and screed levelled so the finish does not telegraph.
Furniture moved and replaced
Rooms cleared and reset on the same visit, including beds and wardrobes dismantled where necessary.

Local knowledge that changes the job
The region's staircases
Terraced housing across Small Heath, Sparkbrook, Tipton, Cradley Heath and Coventry typically has a narrow straight flight with a quarter turn at the top and a boxed-in bulkhead over the door. The turn is where the labour is: each winder is a separate template and a separate cut.
Interwar semis in Erdington, Wednesfield, Bearwood and Castle Bromwich mostly have a wider straight flight with a half-landing — faster to fit, but the half-landing joint has to be positioned where it will not be walked over directly, or it will show within a year.
Subfloors, damp and old boards
Ground-floor rooms in the region's Victorian stock are usually suspended timber over a ventilated void, and the boards are often cupped or loose. We punch nails, re-fix squeaking boards and, where the surface is too uneven for carpet, board over with hardboard before fitting.
In converted cellars and some Black Country ground floors the slab is solid but can hold residual damp. Carpet laid straight onto a damp screed will smell within months, so we check with a meter and fit a damp-proof membrane and appropriate underlay where the reading calls for it.
Victorian boards, draughts and the hardboard question
Pre-1919 terraces across Small Heath, Sparkhill, Tipton and Foleshill sit on suspended timber floors with gaps between the boards, and carpeting straight over them leaves a cold draught coming up through the underlay within a winter. It also telegraphs every board line into the pile.
We screw down loose boards and lay hardboard or thin ply first. It costs a morning and it changes both the feel underfoot and the room's heat loss — which matters more in this housing stock than almost any upgrade of the carpet itself.
Winder staircases in terraced housing
The region's terraces overwhelmingly have winder stairs — the triangular treads on a quarter turn — and they are the reason stair carpet is quoted per staircase rather than per square metre. Each winder is a separate template with its own angles, and there is no way to approximate them from a straight-flight pattern.
We template every winder individually and set the pattern so it runs true up the flight rather than skewing at the turn. On a runner we also centre it to the tread rather than the wall, because in a settled terrace those two lines are rarely the same.
Concrete, screed and damp in ground floors
Post-war and 1960s ground floors across Chelmsley Wood, Coventry and much of the Black Country are solid concrete, sometimes with an original bitumen damp-proof membrane and sometimes with nothing at all. Laying good carpet onto a screed that is still passing moisture ruins the underlay and eventually the backing.
We meter the slab before fitting. Where the reading is high we advise a liquid DPM or a breathable underlay rather than carrying on regardless — it is a short conversation that protects a floor you are paying for once.

When the job is a move, not a fixing
Plenty of carpet fitting enquiries start as something else — a house move, a store collection or an office change. These pages price that side of the work properly rather than squeezing it into an hourly handyman slot.

Empty house, carpet down, furniture in — sequenced so nothing is walked over wet.
From £320 per movepacking so rooms can be emptied for fitting

Other West Midlands services
Most jobs in the region touch more than one trade — a tenancy clean before a move, an assembly visit after a delivery, or an office contract that needs both. These hubs price each side properly.

Carpet Fitting in the West Midlands — FAQs
Q1.How much does carpet fitting cost in the West Midlands?
A single room up to 16m² starts at £80, a straight stair flight at £140 and stairs with winders plus a landing at £220. Uplift and licensed disposal of the old carpet is from £35 per room.
Q2.Do you supply the carpet?
We can source it, or fit carpet you have already bought from any retailer. Fitting-only is very common and there is no surcharge for supplying your own.
Q3.Do you take the old carpet away?
Yes, under our waste-carrier licence. That saves booking a council bulky-waste collection, which most West Midlands authorities charge for, and avoids the van-permit restrictions at several Household Recycling Centres.
Q4.Will you trim the doors?
Yes. Doors are eased to the new floor height and thresholds are fitted at every change of floorcovering, which is included in the room price.
Q5.Why do carpets ripple after a year?
Almost always because they were not properly stretched at fitting. We use a knee kicker and a power stretcher on every room, which is what keeps a carpet flat over its life.
Q6.Do I need hardboard under my carpet?
On the region's Victorian suspended timber floors, almost always. It stops draughts coming up between the boards and stops every board line telegraphing into the pile. It adds around £90 a room and changes the room's warmth noticeably.
Q7.Why are stairs quoted separately?
Because West Midlands terraces almost all have winder stairs, and each triangular tread on the turn is its own template with its own angles. They cannot be approximated from a straight-flight measurement, so they are priced per staircase.
Q8.Can you fit a stair runner with rods?
Yes, from £180. The runner is set out, centred to the treads rather than the walls, and rodded at each riser — centring to the wall in a settled terrace is why runners look crooked.
Q9.Can you carpet straight onto a concrete floor?
Only after a moisture reading. Older solid ground floors here often have a failed damp-proof membrane or none at all, and fitting over a damp slab destroys the underlay and eventually the carpet backing.
