Moving in Hampshire

A Hampshire move is quoted from the street first, because the counties' two ends could not be less alike. Basingstoke, Fareham's Western Wards, Whiteley, Chandler's Ford and Andover's expansion estates were laid out for vehicles: drives, garages, turning heads and verges, so the price is about volume, floors and lifts. Portsmouth, central Eastleigh and the older terraced streets of Southampton are the opposite — no off-street parking, narrow carriageways and resident permit schemes — so the survey establishes where the vehicle can legally stand, whether a bay suspension is worth arranging, and what the carry distance actually is.

We run full house removals, single-item and part-load man-with-a-van work, office and commercial moves, and packing or part-packing, with insured crews and a written quote before anything is loaded. Waterside and modern blocks at Ocean Village, Gunwharf and Whiteley are booked through the managing agent for service-lift time, floor protection and permitted hours. Winchester's core and the narrow lanes in the SO21 and SP11 villages get a smaller vehicle or a shuttle, planned in advance. Long-distance moves out of the county are priced the same way, on volume and access at both ends.

Where removals demand concentrates in Hampshire

Southampton and Portsmouth between them account for most of our moving work, split between student and professional lets in the city centres and settled family moves in the suburbs at Bitterne, Shirley, Bassett, Cosham and Drayton. Basingstoke produces a high volume of moves within the town as families trade up through the estates, and it is the easiest large town in the county to load in. Fareham, Eastleigh and Winchester generate the full-house removals, mostly from Locks Heath, Park Gate, Whiteley, Chandler's Ford, Weeke and Badger Farm. Farnborough's contract-driven rented sector keeps a steady flow of part-load and single-item jobs running through GU14, and Andover's SP11 villages bring the downsizing moves where the lane decides the vehicle.

Parking, permits and the Portsmouth zone

Access is the price variable in Hampshire, not distance. On Portsea Island the terraces were built before private cars and there is frequently no lawful place to leave a Luton for an hour, so we arrange a bay suspension where the job justifies the cost or plan a shuttle from the nearest legal stopping point and put the carry in the quote in writing. Southampton's permit zones behave similarly across SO14, SO15 and SO17. One point is worth stating plainly because it is widely misread: Portsmouth's Clean Air Zone is Class B, which charges non-compliant buses, coaches, taxis, private hire vehicles and HGVs — it does not charge vans or cars, so a domestic removal in Portsmouth attracts no zone charge from us. No part of Hampshire is inside the London ULEZ; if your move continues into a London borough it enters that zone, and we allocate a compliant vehicle and show any charge in the quote before you book.

Moving services and Hampshire prices

Indicative starting prices. Your fixed quote reflects size, floor level and access — the Hampshire realities we survey before booking, not after.

Also available across Hampshire: Long Distance Moves. These are booked through the same team and quoted the same way — ask for them when you request a price.

Common questions

Moving in Hampshire, answered.

  • How do you move a house in Portsmouth with no driveway?

By planning it. We look at the street before quoting and either arrange a resident bay suspension through the council where the job justifies it, or work from the nearest legal stopping point with a shuttle and a stated carry distance. Either way the cost is in the written quote before the day, not added to the invoice afterwards.

  • Will I be charged for Portsmouth's Clean Air Zone?

No. Portsmouth operates a Class B zone, which charges non-compliant buses, coaches, taxis, private hire vehicles and heavy goods vehicles. Vans and cars are not charged, so nothing we bring to a domestic removal or clearance in the city attracts the fee.

  • Can you move into a managed block at Ocean Village or Whiteley?

Yes. We contact the building manager first to book the service lift, agree floor and lift protection and confirm permitted hours, and supply insurance certificates where the block requires them. Blocks that insist on a specific moving window are planned around it rather than argued with.

  • Do you cover the villages around Winchester and Andover?

Yes, across SO21 and SP11. Single-track lanes, flint-walled entrances and farm tracks mean the largest vehicle is often the wrong choice, so we confirm the approach when quoting and send a vehicle that can actually reach and turn at the property.

  • How is a removal priced?

On the volume of what is moving, the floors and lifts involved, the real carry distance at both ends and any packing you want. It is quoted in writing against our national rate card before we start, and the figure holds unless what is actually moving differs from what was described.
