Portsmouth in practice

Portsmouth is the most access-constrained city in the county and pretending otherwise would only produce a quote we could not honour. Most of the city sits on Portsea Island, it is among the most densely populated places in the United Kingdom, and the terraced grid through Fratton, Buckland, North End, Copnor and Milton was built before private cars: front doors open onto the pavement, there are no drives, no side gates and frequently no legal gap long enough to stand a Luton in while it loads. So a Portsmouth quote starts with the street. We check it, arrange a resident bay suspension through the council where the job justifies the cost, or plan a smaller vehicle and a shuttle with the carry distance stated in writing.

Southsea adds a second layer. The large Victorian villas there are mostly split into conversion flats with shared entrances, narrow original staircases and tight half-landings, which is what decides whether a wardrobe or a sofa comes out whole or comes apart. We establish that on the survey rather than on the morning. North of the island at Cosham, Drayton, Farlington and Paulsgrove the city becomes ordinary suburban housing with drives and space to turn, and the pricing looks like anywhere else in Hampshire.

One local fact is worth correcting because it comes up constantly. Portsmouth's Clean Air Zone is Class B: it charges non-compliant buses, coaches, taxis, private hire vehicles and heavy goods vehicles, and it does not charge vans or cars. Nothing we bring to a domestic removal or clearance in Portsmouth attracts that fee, and any quote suggesting otherwise is wrong. Portsmouth is also a unitary authority, so the city's own tip, parking rules and bulky-waste collection apply rather than the county's.

Portsmouth at a glance

Housing stock
Dense Victorian and Edwardian bylaw terraces through Fratton, Buckland, North End, Copnor and Milton, most of them without off-street parking; large Victorian villas and conversion flats across Southsea; naval and post-war housing at Paulsgrove and Wymering; and suburban semis with drives on the mainland at Cosham, Drayton and Farlington
Access on the day
Portsmouth is the hardest access in the county and it is not close. Portsea Island's terraced grid is almost entirely resident permit parking with narrow carriageways, no driveways and, in much of Southsea and Fratton, no legal place to leave a Luton for an hour. We plan a stopping point, a suspension where one is needed, or a smaller vehicle with a shuttle, and the carry goes in the written quote. Portsmouth City Council is a unitary authority running its own tip, parking scheme and bulky collections. It also operates a Class B Clean Air Zone, which charges non-compliant buses, coaches, taxis, private hire vehicles and HGVs — vans and cars are not charged, so nothing we bring to a domestic job attracts the fee.

Common questions

Portsmouth questions, answered.

  • Which parts of Portsmouth do you cover?

Every address in PO1, PO2, PO3, PO4, PO5, PO6, plus the surrounding Hampshire villages and neighbouring Fareham, Southampton, Winchester, Eastleigh. There is no travel surcharge inside that area.

  • Do you work on Portsmouth's type of housing?

Yes. Dense Victorian and Edwardian bylaw terraces through Fratton, Buckland, North End, Copnor and Milton, most of them without off-street parking; large Victorian villas and conversion flats across Southsea; naval and post-war housing at Paulsgrove and Wymering; and suburban semis with drives on the mainland at Cosham, Drayton and Farlington We size the crew, the van and the kit to the property rather than quoting one flat template for the whole county.

  • Where will the crew park in Portsmouth?

We confirm the loading point with you when the job is booked, so nothing is decided on the doorstep on the day.

  • How quickly can you get to PO1?

Most Portsmouth jobs are booked within two to three days, and we hold same-week slots for end-of-tenancy cleans and clearances tied to a fixed check-out or completion date.

Many thanks to Izabel's team in Southampton for doing truly an amazing job! We moved into a pretty disgusting house and the team achieved wonders in just a few hours! Buyers should bear in mind however that Hello Services charges a 50% cancellation fee if you cancel - which we thought was pretty high!

Really good job done in a very dirty and greasy flat. Staff friendly and communicated well. Arrived 45mins late but notified this in advance. Very pleased with the work.
