A unitary city built mostly on Portsea Island, one of the most densely populated places in the United Kingdom, with long naval terraces, Victorian Southsea and a mainland northern edge at Cosham and Drayton.
The housing stock is Dense Victorian and Edwardian bylaw terraces through Fratton, Buckland, North End, Copnor and Milton, most of them without off-street parking; large Victorian villas and conversion flats across Southsea; naval and post-war housing at Paulsgrove and Wymering; and suburban semis with drives on the mainland at Cosham, Drayton and Farlington, which decides the tools, protection and crew size we bring to a man with a van job.
Portsmouth is the hardest access in the county and it is not close. Portsea Island's terraced grid is almost entirely resident permit parking with narrow carriageways, no driveways and, in much of Southsea and Fratton, no legal place to leave a Luton for an hour. We plan a stopping point, a suspension where one is needed, or a smaller vehicle with a shuttle, and the carry goes in the written quote. Portsmouth City Council is a unitary authority running its own tip, parking scheme and bulky collections. What changes the price on a man with a van job
- Volume is easy to underestimate. A one-bed flat with a full loft or garage is a two-load job in a single van; send photos and we will tell you straight whether it fits in one run.
- Parking, congestion charge and ULEZ where they are genuinely incurred are the only pass-through items on a van job: they are listed separately on the quote at cost, never marked up.
- We do not carry hazardous goods, fuel, paint tins or live plants in a stacked load, and pianos, safes and full-size gym equipment are a specialist quote rather than an hourly job.
- Parking decides the price more than distance does: a suspended bay, a permit or a long carry from the nearest legal stopping point adds time, and we would rather price that honestly up front than start the clock and surprise you.
- Floor level matters. Third floor with no lift is a slower carry than a ground-floor flat, so tell us the level at both ends and we will send the right number of crew instead of running over.

How quickly can you book man with a van in Portsmouth?

How many hours should I book?
A studio or small one-bed with a straightforward carry is usually two to three hours; a full one-bed with a garage or loft is typically four to five. Book the estimate rather than the best case — we bill the time actually used in 30-minute blocks after the two-hour minimum, so booking a little long costs you nothing.
Will you help carry, or is it just the driving?

Do you take furniture away or to the tip as part of the move?
We can take a small amount of unwanted furniture at the same visit, but it is charged separately because it goes to a licensed transfer station and we pay by weight. We are an Environment Agency registered waste carrier (CBDU300454), and you get the transfer note. If most of the load is waste, a clearance quote is cheaper than an hourly van.
What happens if something is damaged?
Goods in transit cover of £10k per load applies to everything we put in the van, alongside £1m public liability. We note anything already marked or fragile with you before it is loaded, and anything raised within 24 hours of the job is put right under our complaints policy rather than argued about.
Can you do same-day, evening or weekend collections?
Often, yes — same-day depends on where the van already is that morning. Out-of-hours and weekend slots are charged at 1.25× the standard hourly rate, and you are told that before you book, never afterwards.
