Service availability
European Moves is available in 62 West Midlands towns
We cover the B, CV, DY, WV, WS, WR postcode areas daily and the wider ST, TF, SY, HR districts on scheduled runs. Same-week slots are usual, next-day is common outside peak weekends, and every job is confirmed in writing with a fixed price before a crew is booked.
European Moves across the West Midlands
Since the end of free movement, the hard part of a European move is no longer the driving — it is the paperwork. Every household consignment leaving the UK needs an itemised valued inventory, and most people relocating permanently need Transfer of Residence relief to avoid import duty and VAT on their own furniture.
We prepare that with you. Your West Midlands survey produces the valued inventory in the format customs expect, we apply for ToR or the destination equivalent, and we brief you on what cannot travel — open alcohol, aerosols, certain plants and foods, and anything requiring a CITES certificate.
From there you choose a dedicated full load, which is faster and lets you set both dates, or a shared part load, which typically costs 40–60% less but delivers within a window rather than on a fixed day.
Collection out of the West Midlands is its own planning job. A 7.5t export vehicle cannot sit inside the A4540 Middleway on a red route, cannot reverse into most Black Country blue-brick entries, and cannot legally block a Solihull cul-de-sac turning head — so we decide at survey whether you get a direct load or a shuttle van feeding a trailer parked on an industrial estate near M6 J9 or M42 J4.
Timing is the last variable people underestimate. Birmingham Airport and the Coventry university calendar push demand for European relocations into late June, August and mid-September, and the Channel crossing slots that matter for household freight are booked days rather than hours ahead. Give us four to six weeks and the destination end is arranged before your van leaves.
How to book
Book european moves in five steps
Step 1 — pick the service shape that fits
- Best if you are flexible by a week
Shared part load
Your 5–15m³ shares a vehicle on a fixed corridor. Lowest cost per cubic metre, delivery inside a window.
from £790 - Best for whole houses and fixed dates
Dedicated full load
One vehicle, your consignment only, collection and delivery dates you choose and the shortest transit.
from £3,200 - Best when the lease dates do not line up
Move plus UK storage
We collect, hold palletised near M6 J9 and export when the destination is ready — one contract, no double handling.
from £26/week
- Step 1
Tell us the destination and rough volume
Country, town and how many rooms — that alone tells us whether a part load or a dedicated vehicle is the right shape for your move.
- Step 2
Video or on-site survey
We measure cubic metres, check whether your West Midlands street can take an export vehicle, and produce the valued inventory customs will read.
- Step 3
Choose your load type and dates
Fixed-date full load, or a shared part load with a delivery window that saves 40–60%. You see both prices before you decide.
- Step 4
Paperwork and ToR submitted
We file the Transfer of Residence relief and destination documents against your locked inventory, with the HMRC reference travelling with the consignment.
- Step 5
Collection, crossing and door-to-door delivery
Export wrapping on collection day, a realistic Channel buffer, then unwrap and placement inside your new home rather than a kerbside drop.

What's included
Valued inventory prepared for customs
Itemised, valued and formatted as the destination authority requires, produced from your survey.
ToR and duty relief applications
We prepare and submit Transfer of Residence relief so your own household goods are not taxed as imports.
Export wrapping standard
Double-walled cartons, edge protection and shrink-wrapped palletisation built for ferry and Channel Tunnel movement.
Full load or part load
Dedicated vehicle for fixed dates, or a shared groupage load for the lowest cost per cubic metre.
Door-to-door delivery
Delivery inside the destination property with unwrap and placement, not a kerbside drop.
Marine and transit insurance
All-risk cover priced from your declared inventory value, valid across the whole journey.
Shuttle collection where access fails
Where a trailer cannot reach your street — Middleway red routes, Black Country entries, Solihull turning heads — a small van shuttles to the export vehicle at no extra charge.
Destination access check
We confirm the far-end parking rules, lift booking and any residents' permit before departure, so the vehicle is not turned away after 900 miles.

Local knowledge that changes the job
Why West Midlands loads run through the Channel
From Birmingham, the M6 to M40 to M25 route to Dover or Folkestone is roughly four hours in clear traffic, which means most European departures from this region load in the morning and cross the same evening. Loads from Coventry and Warwickshire pick up the M40 earlier still.
We build a realistic crossing buffer into every schedule rather than the optimistic one — Kent border checks for household consignments have been the main source of delay since 2021, and a load that misses its booked crossing waits for the next available freight slot, not the next passenger one.
Part loads, and what actually saves money
Shared groupage is the single biggest saving available on a European move, and it works best if you are flexible by a week either side. We consolidate West Midlands consignments to the main corridors — northern France, Benelux, western Germany, Catalonia and the Costas — so a 10m³ household load travels at a fraction of a dedicated vehicle cost.
The second saving is volume discipline. Because European pricing is per cubic metre, decluttering before the survey pays back directly. Anything you decide not to take can go the same week through our West Midlands clearance service rather than travelling 900 miles to be thrown away.
Loading an export vehicle out of a West Midlands street
The Clean Air Zone inside the Middleway is the smaller half of the problem — our vehicles are compliant. The real constraint is length: an articulated export trailer cannot serve Digbeth or Jewellery Quarter loading bays, the terraced grids of Bearwood and Smethwick, or the tight blue-brick rear entries typical of Dudley and Wednesbury.
So most B, DY and WS collections load into a Luton and shuttle to the trailer at a yard by M6 J9 or M42 J4. Where the street can take a rigid vehicle — the interwar semis of Erdington, the driveways of Sutton Coldfield and Dickens Heath — we load direct and save you a handling stage. Bay suspensions in Birmingham, Coventry, Sandwell and Wolverhampton need three to ten working days' notice, which is why the survey happens early rather than the week before.
Who moves abroad from this region, and when
Three groups dominate our European bookings here. Engineering and automotive staff moving with employers along the M42 and Coventry's manufacturing corridor, usually needing invoicing to a company and a written transit schedule for HR. Academic and clinical relocations out of Edgbaston, Selly Oak and Earlsdon, tied to the university and hospital calendar. And retirement moves from Solihull, Sutton Coldfield and rural Warwickshire, typically full loads to Spain, Portugal or south-west France.
Each has a different peak. Corporate moves cluster at quarter ends, university-linked moves at late June and mid-September, and retirement moves avoid the Iberian summer entirely — most people choose September to November so they are not unloading a container at 34°C.
Customs, ToR and the paperwork that delays loads
Transfer of Residence relief must be applied for before the goods arrive, and HMRC issues a unique reference that travels with the consignment. Most delays we see start with a mismatch between the inventory and reality: undeclared boxes, a bike added on the day, or a value list written in round numbers with no supporting basis.
We handle that by locking the inventory at survey and re-checking it at collection. Non-EU-standard items get flagged early — firearms and ammunition, certain medications, plants and soil, and anything with ivory or protected species content needing CITES. If you are moving from the West Midlands with a vehicle as well, that is a separate customs process and its own timeline, and we tell you which order to do them in.

Choosing the right move type
European Moves is one route through our West Midlands moving work. If your job is shaped differently, these pages price it properly rather than approximating it.
Moving within the West Midlands instead of abroad
Same survey, same crews, no customs paperwork — the right page if the new address is still in B, CV, DY, WS or WV.

Scotland, Cornwall or the far south coast are priced by distance and overnight rules, not by cubic metre.

Customs want an itemised valued inventory; professionally packed cartons are how that list gets built accurately.
From £180 per propertyRelocating a business or team overseas
Crate hire, IT decommission and a phased cutover, planned around the crossing rather than a single move day.

European Moves in the West Midlands — FAQs
Q1.How much does a European move from Birmingham cost?
A 10m³ shared part load to France or the Benelux countries starts around £1,450, Spain and Portugal around £1,850, and a dedicated full load from about £3,200. Price is driven by cubic metres, destination and whether you need fixed dates.
Q2.Do you handle customs paperwork and ToR?
Yes. We prepare the itemised valued inventory from your survey and submit the Transfer of Residence relief application so your own household goods are not charged import duty and VAT.
Q3.What is the difference between a full load and a part load?
A full load is a dedicated vehicle — you set the collection and delivery dates and transit is fastest. A part load shares the vehicle with other consignments, costs substantially less per cubic metre, and delivers within a window of a few days.
Q4.How long does delivery take?
Northern France and the Benelux countries are typically 3–6 days on a part load, Spain and Portugal 7–12 days, and a dedicated full load is usually next-day to 72 hours depending on distance and crossing availability.
Q5.What can't I send?
Open alcohol and aerosols, gas bottles, paints and solvents, most fresh food and plants, and anything covered by CITES without a certificate. We give you the full destination-specific list at survey stage.
Q6.Can a big export lorry reach my street in Birmingham or the Black Country?
Often not, and that is planned for rather than improvised. Terraced grids around Bearwood and Smethwick, blue-brick rear entries in Dudley and Wednesbury and city-centre loading bays cannot take a trailer, so we shuttle with a Luton to the export vehicle at a yard near M6 J9 or M42 J4 at no extra cost.
Q7.How far ahead should I book a European move from the West Midlands?
Four to six weeks is comfortable, and longer for August and mid-September when university-linked relocations around Selly Oak and Earlsdon peak. Household freight crossings are booked days ahead, so a late booking usually costs a wider delivery window rather than more money.
Q8.Can you invoice my employer for a relocation?
Yes. Company relocations along the M42 and Coventry's manufacturing corridor are routine for us — we issue a written transit schedule, a valued inventory and a purchase-order-referenced invoice that HR and finance teams can process directly.
