Most of our Hampshire handyman work is the same short list: flat-pack and furniture assembly, TV and shelf mounting, curtain poles and blinds, mirrors and pictures hung properly, door and lock adjustments, dripping taps, sealant renewal around baths and worktops, and the small repairs that come up at the end of a tenancy. Each is priced by the job and the fixing required, quoted before we start, so you are not paying for an hourly clock while somebody finds a stud.
The fixing is the part that varies here, and it varies more in Hampshire than in most counties. The post-war and modern estates in Basingstoke, Andover, Whiteley, Chandler's Ford and the Western Wards are blockwork, plasterboard on dabs or timber studwork, and take a conventional fixing once the wall is read correctly. Victorian terraces in Portsmouth, Eastleigh and inner Southampton are solid brick with lath or hard plaster. Winchester's core and the SO21 and SP11 villages run to lath and plaster, cob, flint and soft handmade brick, where a standard plug will pull out under a loaded TV bracket. We test first and say so when a heavy fixing should not be made at all.
Where handyman demand concentrates in Hampshire
Southampton and Portsmouth produce the most volume, largely tenancy-related: assembly, mounting and small end-of-tenancy repairs in flats and shared houses across SO14, SO17, PO1, PO4 and PO5. Basingstoke, Fareham and Eastleigh bring the family-home work — mounting, shelving, garden gates and the jobs that accumulate after a move into an estate house at Chineham, Locks Heath, Whiteley or Chandler's Ford. Farnborough's contract-let flats generate a steady stream of mount-and-remove work as tenancies turn over. Winchester and Andover's villages bring the careful jobs, in property where the answer is sometimes that the fixing should not be made.
Listed property, conservation areas and what we will not fix
Winchester's historic core is largely conservation area and contains a high concentration of listed buildings, and the SO21 and SP11 villages around Winchester and Andover hold plenty more. Listed-building controls limit what can be attached to a protected elevation, and the wall behind the plaster is frequently lath, cob, flint or soft handmade brick that will not hold a standard plug under load. Our approach is the same everywhere in Hampshire: test the wall, choose the fixing for what is actually there, and where the honest answer is that a heavy bracket should not go on that wall, say so and offer an alternative rather than putting in a screw and hoping. Rented property gets the same treatment in reverse — we advise on what will pass a check-out inspection and make good where a previous fixing has left damage.

Do you charge by the hour or by the job?
By the job. You get a written price for the work described, against our national rate card, before anyone starts. If something is different from the description once we can see it — a wall that will not take the intended fixing, for instance — we tell you and re-quote before continuing rather than running a meter.
Can you mount a TV on a Victorian wall in Portsmouth or Southampton?
Usually yes. Solid brick behind lath or hard plaster takes a proper fixing once it is read correctly, and we test before drilling. Where the plaster is loose or the brick is soft we use a fixing suited to it or advise a different position, and we say plainly if a heavy bracket should not go on that wall.
Will you work in a listed building in Winchester?
Yes, within what the listing allows. Listed-building controls restrict what can be attached to a protected elevation, and interior fabric in these properties is often lath and plaster or cob. We work to what is permitted and appropriate, and where a fixing should not be made we explain why and suggest an alternative.
