Plain concrete and tarmac take full pressure with no risk to the finish, so they're priced lower per square metre. Block paving, resin-bound and imprinted concrete all need the pressure stepped down to protect joints, aggregate or sealant, which is why they cost more per square metre even though the wash itself covers the same area.

Why a London driveway needs the right pressure, not just a wash.

The surface under the dirt is what actually sets the method. Get the pressure wrong on the wrong surface and the driveway looks worse, not better, once it dries.

Block paving is mostly joints, not surface

A typical London block-paving driveway has hundreds of joints packed with kiln-dried sand that locks the blocks together and stops them rocking under a car's weight. A pressure washer set for plain concrete will blow that sand straight out of the joints, and a driveway left like that starts shifting within a few months of traffic.

We run block paving at a stepped-down pressure and always plan the re-sanding pass into the same visit where it's included, brushing new kiln-dried sand in and compacting it once the surface has dried rather than leaving empty joints behind.

Resin-bound and imprinted concrete are finishes, not just surfaces

Resin-bound driveways, common on newer developments across Barnet, Bromley and Havering, bind loose aggregate into a resin layer that a standard turbo nozzle can strip if run too close or too hard. Pattern-imprinted concrete relies on a sprayed colour hardener and a sealant coat for its finish, and once that sealant wears through the surface starts soaking up oil and tyre marks it previously shed.

We treat both as finishes to be preserved: a soft head and lower bar pressure on resin-bound, and a sealant reapplication on imprinted concrete once it's clean and dry, so the driveway sheds the next set of stains rather than absorbing them.

Conservation-area frontages get their own pressure setting

Several London conservation areas protect the original boundary treatment of a period property, including a stone-sett or brick driveway laid with lime mortar rather than modern cement pointing. Standard jet-washing pressure strips lime mortar out of the joints in a way it never would with cement, turning a clean into a repointing job.

We ask about the age and construction of an older driveway before setting the pressure, and drop it further on anything laid before modern cementitious paving became standard.

Wastewater has somewhere to go, and it isn't the gutter

A driveway wash carries detergent, biocide and whatever oil or algae has been lifted off the surface, and letting that run straight into a road gutter sends it into the surface water drain network rather than the treated foul sewer. Water companies' trade effluent guidance is clear that this kind of run-off shouldn't be allowed a free path to a surface water outfall.

  • Will jet washing damage my block paving?

    Not at the pressure and head we use for it. Block paving is cleaned at a lower pressure than tarmac or concrete specifically so it doesn't blow the jointing sand out — and where re-sanding is included, we top it up with kiln-dried sand once the surface has dried.

  • Can you clean a resin-bound driveway without damaging it?

    Yes, with a soft rotary head at reduced pressure. A standard turbo nozzle can strip loose aggregate out of the resin binder, which is why resin-bound driveways are priced and cleaned differently from concrete or block paving.

  • Do you reseal pattern-imprinted concrete after cleaning?

  • My driveway is in a conservation area — is that a problem?

  • Where does the dirty water go?

  • Do I need to be home for the clean?
