Why London paths need more than a blast of water.

A path's job is to be safely walkable, not just clean-looking, and that's where most of the method comes from.

Natural stone paths need a gentler touch

York stone and sandstone paths, common on Victorian terraces across Islington, Lambeth and Greenwich, are more porous and softer than manufactured concrete flags. A standard turbo nozzle run over natural stone at driveway pressure can pit and etch the surface, leaving pale scarring that stands out worse than the algae it removed.

We use a hand lance and a lower bar pressure on any natural stone path, trading a slightly slower job for a surface that isn't visibly marked afterwards.

Shaded, north-facing paths carry the worst growth

A path running down the shaded side of a terraced house, common where London's narrow plots put the path between two buildings, rarely dries out and grows a slick coating of algae and lichen that pressure alone doesn't fully remove — the roots sit below the surface film.

We treat these stretches with a biocide before washing, which kills the growth at the root rather than just clearing what's visible, so it takes longer to return.

A communal path is a liability question, not just a cleaning one
