Essex's period towns make shelving genuinely skilled work. In Saffron Walden, Coggeshall, Kelvedon and the Colchester Dutch Quarter, alcove walls are frequently lath and plaster over timber, or soft historic brick with lime mortar, and neither takes a standard plug under load. Those runs get toggles, resin anchors or fixings landed directly in the studs, and the shelf itself is often scribed because the wall is nowhere near straight — which is exactly what makes an alcove run look built-in rather than bought.

On the newer estates around Chelmsford, Colchester, Braintree and Basildon, the wall is usually dot-and-dab plasterboard on block. It will happily hold a loaded shelf if the anchor reaches the block behind, and will fail slowly and invisibly if it does not. Because we identify the construction before drilling, we can also tell you honestly when a wall will not carry what you are planning to put on it — before you have paid for the shelves.

  • How much weight can my shelf hold?

    It depends on the wall, not the shelf. A resin or block-reaching anchor in masonry will hold far more than a plasterboard fixing. We size the anchor to what you are storing and tell you the honest limit.

  • Can you fit floating shelves so no brackets show?

    Yes — concealed rod or bar systems cut into the shelf. They need accurate drilling and a suitable wall; on hollow plasterboard with no substrate we will recommend a bracketed alternative rather than promise a floating one.

  • Will you make good if a hole has to move?

    Yes, holes are filled and made ready for touch-up paint. We cannot always match existing paint, so we tell you what you will need to redecorate.

  • Can you fit alcove shelving either side of a chimney breast?

    That is one of the most common Essex jobs we do. Alcoves are rarely square, so shelves are measured and scribed individually rather than cut to a single length.

  • Do you also hang mirrors, pictures and curtain poles?

    Yes, and combining them into one hourly or half-day visit is much cheaper than separate call-outs. Heavy mirrors get the same detection and anchoring approach as shelving.
