Door seal, drum, drawer and pump filter
The black spotting on the rubber door boot, the towels that smell damp before they are dry, the drawer with a crust of set detergent — all one problem. We strip the seal, drawer, filter and dispenser housing of every washing machine we visit in Greater Manchester, descale the drum and heater, and run a service cycle before we leave.
Modern machines are designed around 30°C eco cycles and liquid detergent, and that combination is exactly what biofilm likes: a slimy grey mix of undissolved detergent, fabric softener and body oils that colonises the door seal, the drawer housing and the outer drum. It is what makes clean laundry smell musty, and no amount of extra softener fixes it because softener is part of the food supply.
Greater Manchester sits on soft-to-moderately-soft water off the Pennine reservoirs, so limescale is less of an issue here than it is in Kent or Essex — but heater elements still fur and pump filters still trap coins, hair grips and wire from bras. We fold the door boot back and clean both faces, remove and soak the drawer, degrease the housing and jets, drain and rinse the pump filter, wipe the outer glass and hinge, then run a hot service cycle with a machine-safe descaler so the parts you cannot reach get treated too.

Terraces and semis converted to open kitchen-diners put the machine in the room people eat in, so a musty seal is not a laundry problem, it is a living-room smell. Those are the calls we get most across Chorlton, Withington, Didsbury and Prestwich, and they are almost always biofilm on the door boot rather than a fault with the machine.
Apartment kitchens here almost always hide the machine behind a cabinet door, which traps humidity against the seal and makes the smell worse than in an open utility. We take the cabinet door and trim off for access and realign it on the way out — flag lift access and concierge parking when you book so we plan the round.
Greater Manchester's supply off the Longdendale and Haweswater systems is soft, so heavy limescale is rarer here than in the south — but soft water plus liquid detergent means more undissolved residue, not less. The filters we pull in Bolton, Bury, Oldham and Rochdale are typically clogged with fibre and grit rather than scale, which is why a descaler alone never fixes the smell.

Link to this answerBecause the smell is biofilm in places a service cycle never reaches — the back face of the rubber door boot, the drawer housing above the jets, and the pump filter. Those three have to be cleaned by hand, which is what the visit is for.
Link to this answerMost of them, yes. Surface mould lifts fully. Where the rubber itself has been stained through after years of neglect we will tell you honestly that what remains is discolouration rather than live mould, and it will not come back if the seal is dried after use.
