What we can show you for Chelmsford

Here is what our removals work around Chelmsford looks like in practice.

  • Chelmsford access and housing notes

CM1, CM2, CM3 housing stock and loading reality, written for Chelmsford rather than the county.

Removals in Chelmsford: what actually matters here

Essex's county city, built around the Chelmer and Can rivers, with Victorian terraces in Moulsham, interwar semis in Springfield and dense new apartment blocks around the station.

The housing stock is London stock and Essex red brick, with a fast-growing belt of 2010s apartment blocks at Beaulieu Park and Chelmer Waterside, which decides the tools, protection and crew size we bring to a removals job.

City-centre streets inside the inner ring are permit-controlled with loading bays timed against the morning peak, and the newer riverside blocks are served by underground car parks with 2.0m height barriers, so we survey van height before booking.

The removals quote for a Chelmsford address is built from the load itself — what is going, how far it is carried, and what has to be protected on the way out.

We treat Chelmsford as one service area: City centre, Moulsham, Springfield, Great Baddow and Chelmer Village and the rest of CM1, CM2 and CM3 share the same removals price list and the same crews.

Crews covering Chelmsford also work witham, braintree and maldon, so a removals slot here is usually part of a local Essex round rather than a long trip out — which is why short-notice and midweek slots are realistic.

Chelmsford is one of the larger settlements in the county, and addresses around Chelmsford Cathedral and Hylands Park in particular tend to need the access details confirmed before the van is loaded — we ask about that at quote stage, not on the day.

The round also takes in Beaulieu Park, Broomfield, Writtle Road and Galleywood, so an address there is booked exactly as one in the centre of Chelmsford would be.

If your removals job runs between Chelmsford and billericay, brentwood and wickford, it is still one booking and one price — we do not split a local job across two quotes.

Every Chelmsford quote starts from the address itself. Two CM1 properties a few streets apart can need different crew sizes for the same removals.

City centre (CM1), Moulsham (CM2) and Springfield (CM1): those are the parts of Chelmsford we plan the round around.

We hold 12 named parts of Chelmsford on the routing sheet, from City centre through to Melbourne, all inside CM1 and CM2.

Where a Chelmsford removals needs a second visit, it is booked from the same round that covers witham and braintree rather than treated as a new job.

What a removals job includes

A house removal is a surveyed, fixed-price job, not an hourly booking: we look at the property, count the volume, work out the access at both ends and quote one number — from £340 for a studio or one-bed, from £520 for a two-bed, and from £780 for a three-bed with a crew of three for the day. Crews carry blankets, straps and trolleys as standard and dismantle and reassemble standard beds and tables as part of the price, with goods in transit cover of £10k per load and £1m public liability in place before anything is loaded.

Before moving day

  • Video or in-person survey, then a fixed written price that does not move unless you add work
  • Volume, crew size and van count planned from the survey rather than guessed on the day
  • Access checked at both ends — parking, lift booking, floor level, stair width
  • A written plan for what gets dismantled and what travels assembled

On the day

  • Floors, banisters and door frames protected on the carry route
  • Furniture blanket-wrapped, mattresses bagged, mirrors and glass carried between boards
  • Standard beds, wardrobes and tables dismantled and rebuilt at the new address
  • Boxes placed in the labelled room, not stacked in the hall

At the new address

  • Large furniture positioned where you want it before the crew leaves
  • Beds rebuilt so the first night does not happen on a mattress on the floor
  • Blankets, boards and our own packaging taken away
  • A signed job sheet recording condition and completion

What changes the price on a removals job

  • Completion-day timing is outside anyone's control. Keys held up by a solicitor happen; we plan a realistic start, and the honest answer is that the crew can only load once you can hand over access.
  • Parking, congestion charge and ULEZ where genuinely incurred are itemised at cost and never marked up. They are the only pass-through on a removal.
  • Pianos, safes, large aquariums and full-size gym equipment are specialist lifts quoted separately, and we do not carry fuel, gas bottles or hazardous goods in a stacked load.
  • Volume, not distance, sets a removal price. A cluttered two-bed with a full loft and garage can be a bigger job than a tidy three-bed, which is why we survey rather than price from bedroom count.
  • Access is the second half. No lift above the third floor, a permit-only street, a long carry from the nearest legal stopping point or a lift that must be booked with a building manager all add crew hours — we would rather find that at survey than at 8am on moving day.

About Chelmsford

Chelmsford is the county city and the busiest single market in Essex for us. The stock splits three ways: Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Moulsham and Old Moulsham, interwar and post-war semis across Springfield, Great Baddow and Galleywood, and a fast-growing belt of apartment blocks at Chelmer Waterside and Beaulieu Park. Each one changes the job — lath-and-plaster and chimney breasts in the terraces, cavity blockwork in the semis, and dot-and-dab with concrete slabs in the new blocks, which is why our handyman vans carry all three anchor sets rather than guessing from the address.

Access is the part that catches people out. Streets inside the inner ring are permit-controlled with loading bays timed against the morning peak, and the riverside blocks are served by underground car parks with barriers around 2.0 metres — too low for a Luton, so those moves run with a smaller vehicle and a shuttle. We survey the stopping point and the barrier height when we quote, not on the doorstep. Clearance waste leaves on our own upper-tier carrier licence with a transfer note, so no Essex County Council tip booking or van permit is needed at your end.

Common questions

Chelmsford questions, answered.

  • How much does removals cost in Chelmsford?

Removals in Chelmsford (CM1, CM2, CM3) starts from £45 per hour. The final figure is fixed before booking and reflects the size of the property, the floor level and the access — which in Chelmsford usually means city-centre streets inside the inner ring are permit-controlled with loading bays timed against the morning peak, and the newer riverside blocks are served by underground car parks with 2.0m height barriers, so we survey van height before booking.

  • Do you cover the whole of Chelmsford?

Yes — every CM1 and CM2 and CM3 street, plus the surrounding Essex towns. Crews are routed within the county rather than dispatched from London, so short-notice slots are realistic.

  • Are you insured for removals work?

We carry £1m public liability cover and hold Environment Agency waste carrier licence CBDU300454. Certificates are available on request and the details are published on our trust and credentials page.

  • How quickly can you book removals in Chelmsford?

Same-week slots are standard in Chelmsford, with next-day often available midweek. Month-end tenancy changeovers are the busiest window across Essex, so book those a week or two ahead.

  • Why survey instead of just quoting by bedrooms?

Because bedroom count does not tell us volume or access, and those are what the day actually costs. A ten-minute video walk-round gives you a fixed price we stand behind rather than an estimate that moves once the van is half full.

  • Do you pack as well?

Packing is a separate service, priced per packer per hour or as a fixed price by property size, and it can be booked for the whole house, for the kitchen and fragiles only, or not at all. Keeping it separate means you are not paying for packing you intend to do yourself.

  • What is covered if something is damaged?

Goods in transit cover of £10k per load applies to everything in the van, with £1m public liability alongside it. Anything already damaged is noted with you before loading, and anything raised within 24 hours is put right rather than argued about.

  • Can the move run over two days?

Yes, and for larger homes it is often the sensible plan — pack and load non-essentials on day one, complete on day two. It is quoted as one job, with the overnight load staying secured in the van or in storage as agreed in writing.

Practical reading before you book in Chelmsford — costs, checklists and what a good job actually looks like.
