Most East Sussex handyman work is fixing something to a wall, and the walls here are unusually varied. Brighton's Regency and Victorian conversions are lath and plaster over soft brick, sometimes with a bungaroosh core — a local rubble-and-lime wall that will not hold a plug reliably and needs the fixing taken back to something solid. Hastings and Lewes add timber-framed and flint construction. Meanwhile the 1990s marina housing at Sovereign Harbour and the new estates at Hailsham and Uckfield are plasterboard on dot-and-dab, where a heavy TV or shelf has to reach the stud or use a proper cavity anchor.

The everyday list is flat-pack and furniture assembly, TV mounting, shelving and mirror hanging, curtain poles and blinds, door easing and lock changes, and the run of small repairs that come with tenancy turnover. Where handyman work concentrates

Brighton generates the most, driven by flat turnover and by the assembly and mounting jobs that come with it. Eastbourne and Bexhill bring a steady stream of grab rails, shelving, blinds and small accessibility work in retirement flats, arranged around the block's own access rules. The Wealden towns — Hailsham, Uckfield, Heathfield, Crowborough, Polegate — are mostly family-home jobs on newer estates: garden gates, flat-pack, wall mounting, small carpentry.

Bungaroosh and other local walls

Bungaroosh is a genuinely local problem. It is a Regency-period wall built of flint, brick fragments, pebbles and lime, common in older Brighton and Hove property, and it looks like an ordinary plastered wall until a drill goes in and the hole crumbles. A standard plug in bungaroosh is not a fixing — it is a hole waiting to fail with a television on it. Where we find it we use resin anchors or a spreader batten fixed into sound material, and we explain the change before doing it, because the honest answer is sometimes that the mounting point has to move.

    Usually yes, but the wall decides the method. Older Brighton and Hove property often has lath and plaster or bungaroosh behind the finish, which will not hold an ordinary plug.
