What we can show you for Colchester

Here is what our packing services work around Colchester looks like in practice.

  • Colchester access and housing notes

CO1, CO2, CO3, CO4 housing stock and loading reality, written for Colchester rather than the county.

Packing Services in Colchester: what actually matters here

Britain's oldest recorded town and now a city, mixing Roman walls and Dutch Quarter lanes with large garrison-era estates and student housing around the university at Greenstead.

The housing stock is Georgian townhouses and Victorian terraces in the centre, with post-2000 garrison redevelopment housing at Berechurch and Hythe, which decides the tools, protection and crew size we bring to a packing services job.

The Dutch Quarter and North Hill are narrow, steep and single-track in places, so larger removals are staged with a shuttle van, and university-area tenancy changeovers in June and September book out weeks ahead.

Before a Colchester packing services is booked we agree the loading point and the timings, because that is what decides whether the day runs long.

Our Colchester footprint runs across CO1, CO2 and CO3 and takes in Town centre, Dutch Quarter and Lexden, all on the same packing services pricing.

Colchester sits on a round that already includes clacton-on-sea, witham and braintree, which is why a packing services slot here rarely needs a week's notice.

As one of the larger settlements in the county built around Colchester Castle and the Roman wall, Colchester has a mix of approach roads and loading points, so we confirm parking and carry distance when you book rather than assuming.

We also work Greenstead, Highwoods, Prettygate and Shrub End as part of the Colchester area, with no difference in how the packing services quote is built.

Colchester to maldon and chelmsford is a run the team does regularly, and a packing services across that route is quoted as a single job.

Every Colchester quote starts from the address itself. Two CO1 properties a few streets apart can need different crew sizes for the same packing services.

For routing we hold Colchester as its named parts — Town centre (CO1), Dutch Quarter (CO1) and Lexden (CO3) — so the crew knows the approach before the van leaves.

Colchester is a 12-area footprint for us — Town centre to Stanway — and the packing services quote is built from the address inside it, not the town name.

We confirm the Colchester slot in writing with a time window, and the crew calls from clacton-on-sea or witham when they set off.

What a packing services job includes

Packing is priced two ways so you only buy what you need: per packer per hour — £30 for one, £55 for two, with a two-hour minimum — or as a fixed price by property size, from £180 for a studio or one-bed, £280 for a two-bed and £420 for a three-bed. Materials are charged at cost, a two-bed materials pack starts at £68, and empty cartons are collected free after the move. Unpacking at the new address is charged the same hourly way, with boxes flattened and taken away.

Materials

  • Double-wall cartons, tissue paper, bubble wrap and tape supplied and charged at cost
  • Wardrobe cartons so hanging clothes travel on the rail
  • Purpose-made cartons for pictures, mirrors, TVs and lamps
  • Mattress bags and protective covers for soft furnishings

The pack

  • Room-by-room packing with a numbered inventory as we go
  • Every carton labelled with its room and its contents, not just a room name
  • China, glass and stemware individually wrapped and packed on edge rather than stacked flat
  • Electronics packed with their cables, and screens boxed upright
  • A clearly marked essentials box kept back for the first night

Options

  • Fragile-only pack for the kitchen and glassware, from £120, when you are doing the rest yourself
  • Full pack the day before the move so loading starts on time
  • Unpacking at the new address at £30 per hour, with cartons flattened and removed
  • Free collection of empty cartons after you have finished unpacking

What changes the price on a packing services job

  • Materials are at cost, not a profit line, so over-ordering costs you money for no benefit — we would rather bring a realistic quantity and top up than sell you a pallet of cartons.
  • We do not pack fuel, aerosols under pressure, paint or gas bottles, and open food and plants are best moved by you in the car.
  • Packing takes longer than people expect. A studio is typically four to six hours for one packer and a family home a full day for two, which is why the fixed prices are set by property size rather than by an optimistic hour count.
  • The kitchen is the room that decides the timings — glassware, china and small appliances are slow, careful work, and it is the room most often left to the last hour by self-packers.
  • Boxes you packed yourself are still covered for transit, but we cannot verify the contents or how they were wrapped; where a fragile item matters, let us pack it and it is documented on the inventory.

About Colchester

Colchester runs from Roman wall to garrison redevelopment inside three miles. Georgian townhouses and Victorian terraces fill the centre and the Dutch Quarter, Lexden and Prettygate hold larger interwar villas, and Berechurch and the Hythe carry the post-2000 garrison and waterside housing. Add the university at Greenstead and you get a rental market that turns over hard twice a year, which is why our end-of-tenancy diary for CO4 fills weeks ahead in June and September.

The old town is the constraint. North Hill and the lanes below the castle are steep, narrow and single-track in places, with no realistic stopping point outside many front doors, so larger removals are staged from a legal position with a shuttle van rather than attempting a lorry. The newer estates at Highwoods and Stanway are simple to reach but have tight turning heads that suit a 3.5-tonne Luton. Everything we clear leaves under our own waste carrier licence with a transfer note issued to you, and Colchester crews also cover Wivenhoe, West Mersea, Tiptree and the Clacton side without a travel uplift.

Common questions

Colchester questions, answered.

  • How much does packing services cost in Colchester?

Packing Services in Colchester (CO1, CO2, CO3, CO4) starts from £45 per hour. The final figure is fixed before booking and reflects the size of the property, the floor level and the access — which in Colchester usually means the Dutch Quarter and North Hill are narrow, steep and single-track in places, so larger removals are staged with a shuttle van, and university-area tenancy changeovers in June and September book out weeks ahead.

  • Do you cover the whole of Colchester?

Yes — every CO1 and CO2 and CO3 and CO4 street, plus the surrounding Essex towns. Crews are routed within the county rather than dispatched from London, so short-notice slots are realistic.

  • Are you insured for packing services work?

We carry £1m public liability cover and hold Environment Agency waste carrier licence CBDU300454. Certificates are available on request and the details are published on our trust and credentials page.

  • How quickly can you book packing services in Colchester?

Same-week slots are standard in Colchester, with next-day often available midweek. Month-end tenancy changeovers are the busiest window across Essex, so book those a week or two ahead.

  • Should I pay for packing or do it myself?

Do the wardrobes and the books yourself if you have the time; get the kitchen, the glassware and anything breakable packed properly. A fragile-only pack from £120 buys most of the protection for a fraction of the full-pack price.

  • How many boxes will I need?

We estimate from the survey and bring what the property size suggests — a two-bed materials pack starts at £68 — then top up if needed. Materials are charged at cost, so you pay for what you actually use.

  • Do you take the empty boxes away?

Yes. Empty cartons are collected free after the move, and if you book unpacking they are flattened and taken away on the same visit.

Practical reading before you book in Colchester — costs, checklists and what a good job actually looks like.
