Handyman services in Oxfordshire

Oxfordshire property runs from Cotswold stone that predates the drill to new-build plasterboard, and a handyman who does not check which one he is in makes a mess of both.

Handyman in Oxfordshire

We do the small jobs that never justify a specialist trade: flat-pack assembly, shelving, curtain poles and blinds, door adjustments and locks, small carpentry, filling and making good, mounting, sealing and general repairs. Work is quoted by the job or by an agreed block of hours with the scope written down, so you know what will be finished before we start.

What we do not do is pretend to be a trade we are not. Notifiable electrical work and gas work go to a registered engineer, and we will say so at the quote. On a listed building or in a conservation area we will also say where a job needs consent rather than quietly drilling into something that should not be drilled.

The building tells us how the job runs

The new-build towns — Bicester, Didcot, Carterton, the Banbury estates — are mostly plasterboard, modern fixings and manufacturer instructions, so assembly, mounting and snagging work goes quickly and predictably.

The older towns are a different trade. Cotswold stone in Chipping Norton, Burford and Faringdon, timber frame and lath in Thame and Wallingford, and Georgian brick in Henley and Abingdon all need the right fixing, the right bit and the acceptance that nothing is square. Oxford's Victorian terraces sit in between: solid walls, replastered surfaces and a century of previous alterations behind them.

Listed buildings and conservation areas are the norm here, not the exception

Large parts of Oxfordshire's town centres are conservation areas, and in Henley, Thame, Abingdon, Wallingford, Burford and Chipping Norton a great many individual buildings are listed. That affects small work more than people expect: external fixings, replacement fittings, and anything touching a historic window, door or frontage can need consent from the district council, and listed-building consent is a legal requirement rather than a formality. We flag it, quote the part we can legitimately do, and tell you what needs permission first. It is a slower answer than 'yes', and it is the right one.

Common questions

Handyman in Oxfordshire, answered.

  • Do you do electrical or gas work?

No. Notifiable electrical work and any gas work goes to a registered engineer, and we will tell you that at the quote rather than starting and stopping. We do the wide range of non-notifiable repairs, fixings, assembly and carpentry around it.

  • My house is listed — can you still fit shelves and fixings?

Often yes for internal, reversible work, but not always, and it depends on what is being altered. Anything affecting a historic feature, an external elevation or a fitting of interest can need listed-building consent from your district council. We will say clearly which part of your list we can do now and which part needs permission first.

  • How is a handyman visit priced?

By the job where the job is well defined, or by an agreed block of hours with a written list where it is a mix of small tasks. Either way the scope is agreed before we start, and if something turns out to be bigger than described we stop and tell you rather than running the clock.

  • Which Oxfordshire towns do you cover for small jobs?

All of the towns listed on this page, and the villages around them. Because small jobs are short, we group them geographically — so a Chinnor or Faringdon booking is usually offered on a day when we are already in that part of the county, which keeps the travel charge sensible.
