The housing stock is Victorian and Edwardian terraces through Jericho, East Oxford, Cowley Road and Iffley Fields, a very large share of them in shared occupation; substantial Victorian villas in North Oxford and Summertown; interwar and post-war semis at Headington, Marston, Botley and Cowley; post-war council-built estates at Blackbird Leys, Barton and Rose Hill; and college and university accommodation across the centre and the science areas, which decides the tools, protection and crew size we bring to a furniture assembly job.
Oxford is the hardest access city in the county and the restriction, not the load, sets the plan. The Zero Emission Zone is a pilot covering a named group of city-centre streets only — it is not city-wide, and most jobs never enter it. Around it, almost all of OX1, OX2 and OX4 inside the ring road is controlled parking, with resident bays and short visitor windows; the terraced streets off Cowley Road, Divinity Road and in Jericho are narrow enough that a Luton blocks the carriageway while it loads, and several have bollards or one-way working. What a furniture assembly job includes
Flat-pack and furniture assembly — and dismantling, which is the same skill in reverse — is charged by the hour at £35 with a one-hour minimum, then in 30-minute blocks, or at a flat price for the jobs people book most: £45 for a small item such as a chair, side table or drawer unit, £65 for a standard double or king bed frame, and from £180 for a two or three-door PAX-style wardrobe, which is typically two and a half to four hours. Dismantling a bed, wardrobe or desk before a move, or taking down a unit that is being replaced, is booked the same way and is usually quicker than the original build. The tradesperson brings their own tools, fixings and consumables, and the packaging from the job is flattened and stacked.
The build

- Assembly to the manufacturer's sequence, with cam locks and dowels seated properly rather than forced
- Doors, drawers and hinges adjusted so they sit square and close level
- Wardrobe and bookcase anti-tip brackets fixed to the wall — the step most self-builds skip
Dismantling
- Beds, wardrobes, desks and shelving taken apart in the reverse of the build sequence so panels are not stressed or split
- Wall anchors and brackets removed and the fixing holes left clean
- Fittings, cam locks, dowels and keys bagged and labelled per item so the piece can be rebuilt at the other end

What changes the price on a furniture assembly job
- Missing or damaged parts are the most common cause of an unfinished build. Unbox and check the parts list before the visit and a one-hour job stays a one-hour job.
- Some flat-pack does not survive being dismantled twice — chipboard cam housings and glued dowels in particular. We will tell you before we start if we think a piece is unlikely to rebuild well, so you can decide whether it is worth moving at all.
- Older houses are rarely square. Walls that lean and floors that fall mean fitted units need scribing and packing, which is real time on top of the flat-pack instructions.
- Big items need floor space to build. Clear the room first — an assembly done in a 1m gap between boxes takes noticeably longer.
- If several items are booked at once, the half day at £125 or the full day at £240 is usually better value than stacking hourly jobs, and we will point that out when you book.
- Wall type decides whether a wardrobe or shelf is safe. Plasterboard with no timber behind it needs the right anchor and a load judgement; if we think the wall will not hold what you want on it, we say so instead of fitting it anyway.
