Handyman in Hertfordshire
Most of our Hertfordshire handyman work is fixing something to a wall or building something in a room too small to build it in. Flat-pack furniture and bed assembly, wardrobes including sliding-door systems, shelving and floating shelves, TV brackets, curtain poles and blinds, mirrors, bathroom fittings, door adjustments, and the running list of small repairs that accumulates in any house. We quote per job with a written price, and we bring the fixings — because the fixing, not the labour, is what decides whether a shelf is still level in five years.
That matters because Hertfordshire walls are not one thing. A Watford Junction apartment is likely to be dot-and-dab plasterboard over blockwork, which needs a fixing that reaches the block rather than one that grips the board. A Hemel Hempstead or Stevenage new-town house may have thin partition walls and, in some blocks, no-fines concrete that swallows a standard plug. A St Albans Georgian townhouse or a Letchworth Arts and Crafts cottage will have lath and plaster where the only safe fixing lands on a stud. We identify the wall build-up before drilling, and we say so if the thing you want mounted cannot safely go where you want it.
Where our Hertfordshire handyman cover is strongest
Watford (WD17–WD19, WD24–WD25), Hemel Hempstead (HP1–HP3) and St Albans (AL1, AL3, AL4) carry the densest cover, with Stevenage (SG1–SG2), Welwyn Garden City (AL7–AL8), Hatfield (AL9–AL10) and Hertford (SG13–SG14) close behind on the A1(M) and East Coast side.
Hitchin (SG4–SG5), Letchworth (SG6), Baldock (SG7), Bishop's Stortford (CM23), Borehamwood (WD6), Bushey (WD23), Rickmansworth (WD3), Cheshunt (EN7–EN8) and Hoddesdon (EN11) are covered on the same fixed-price terms. Small jobs in neighbouring towns are often grouped into one visit, which keeps the price down for both.
Conservation stock, heritage estates and new-town walls
Two parts of the county need permission thinking as well as drilling thinking. St Albans' conservation area and Hitchin's and Baldock's listed high-street frontages restrict external alterations, and internal fixings into historic fabric deserve the same care — we work to the stud or the joist and avoid irreversible fixings into original panelling and plasterwork. Letchworth's Arts and Crafts housing is managed in part by a heritage foundation with its own rules about external changes, so anything on an elevation there is your landlord's or the foundation's decision, not ours, and we will tell you before we quote rather than after we drill.
At the other end of the county's age range, Hemel Hempstead and Stevenage new-town housing and the county's post-war blocks bring their own problem: thin partitions, occasional no-fines concrete and hollow ceilings that will not carry a heavy pull-down bracket. Heavy items — large-format televisions, sliding-door wardrobes, wall-hung basins, ceiling-mounted racks — get a fixing spec matched to the wall, and if the wall genuinely will not take the load, we say so and offer the alternative rather than fitting something that will fail quietly.

Handyman in Hertfordshire, answered.
Do you bring the fixings, or do I supply them?
We bring them, and they are included in the quoted price. The fixing is the part that decides whether the job lasts, so we choose it against the wall we find — plasterboard anchors, block fixings, stud screws or resin where the substrate needs it.
Can you mount a TV on a dot-and-dab wall in a Watford apartment?
Yes. Dot-and-dab plasterboard over blockwork is common in the Junction-side blocks, and it needs a fixing long enough to reach and grip the block behind the void rather than one that relies on the board. We check the build-up and the cable route before drilling.
Will you drill into a listed or conservation-area property in St Albans or Hitchin?
Internally, yes, with care — we fix to studs and joists and avoid irreversible fixings into historic panelling and plasterwork. Anything affecting an external elevation of a listed building or a protected frontage needs consent, and that is the owner's or the local authority's call. We flag it at quote stage.
How is a Hertfordshire handyman job priced?
Per job, in writing, before we start — not by an open-ended hourly rate. If you have several small tasks, list them all when you ask and we will group them into one visit, which is almost always cheaper than booking them separately.
Can you assemble beds and wardrobes delivered flat-packed?
Yes — beds, bunk beds, wardrobes including sliding-door and modular systems, desks, drawer units and shelving. Send the product name or model number when you book so we allocate the right time; a large modular wardrobe is a very different job from a bedside table.
Are you insured for handyman work?
Yes. Public liability cover is in place on every job and the certificate is available on request — useful if your building manager or managing agent asks for it before contractors enter an apartment block.
