Hanging Pictures, Mirrors, Poles and Shelves across Hertfordshire
Hertfordshire's walls tell you which decade a street was built in — Stevenage and Hemel Hempstead new-town blockwork, Letchworth and Welwyn garden-city brick with original plaster, and the timber-framed cores of old Hertford and Bishop's Stortford — and each of those wants a different fixing behind a mirror or a shelf.

Why Hertfordshire customers book us
New-town blockwork handled properly
Stevenage and Hemel's post-war blockwork drills easily but crumbles around a badly sized plug; the hole and the anchor are matched to the block, not guessed.
Garden-city plaster respected
Original Letchworth and Welwyn plaster chips if you rush it. Slower drilling and the right bit keeps the face intact rather than leaving a crater to fill.
Cables and pipes found first
Detectors go over every fixing line. Conversions and extensions across the county have wiring in places no regulation would predict.
Straight answer on load
We say what a wall will hold. A floating shelf full of books is a genuinely different question from the same shelf holding three plants.
What hanging includes
Pictures and mirrors
- Single frames, heavy mirrors and full gallery walls set out and agreed before drilling
- Anchors matched to the wall — masonry plug, cavity anchor, or straight into a located stud
- Heights taken from the eye line rather than the skirting where the floor slopes
- Frames levelled and steadied so they stay where you put them
Curtain poles and blinds
- Poles and tracks fixed to lintels, timber or board with the correct anchor for each
- Roller, Venetian, vertical and Roman blinds fitted in or outside the reveal
- Deep new-build reveals measured so the blind clears the handle
- Long runs given the extra centre bracket that stops the sag
Shelves
- Floating and bracketed shelves fitted level and load-tested
- Alcove runs measured and scribed to walls that are not parallel
- Fixings sized for what the shelf is actually going to carry
- Cut ends tidied, dust vacuumed, packaging taken away flat
Hanging prices in Hertfordshire
Every figure below is a fixed price for the whole job, confirmed in writing before you book — not an hourly rate and not an estimate.
| Job | From | What it covers | Typical duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Handyman hourly rate | £35 per hour | Min. 1 hr, then billed in 30-min blocks | 1–4 hours |
| Shelving & picture hanging | £45 | First hour, any wall type | 1–4 hours |
| Half day (up to 4 hrs) | £125 | Best value for a job list | 1–4 hours |
Hanging is charged by the hour with a one-hour minimum, then in 30-minute blocks; several rooms of pictures, poles and shelves in one visit are usually better value as a half day, and we say so when you book.
How booking works
- 1
Tell us the walls and the list
A photo of each wall and a rough list of items is enough for us to bring the right anchors and allow the right amount of time.
- 2
Mark up and confirm
Positions are marked and checked with you first. Gallery walls are laid out and photographed before anything is fixed.
- 3
Drill, level, load-test
Services are detected, anchors fitted, levels checked in both directions and every fixing tested with weight before we leave.

Hanging in Hertfordshire
Hertfordshire has three quite different wall problems inside a small county. The new towns — Stevenage, Hemel Hempstead and much of Welwyn Garden City's later phases — are dominated by lightweight blockwork and early plasterboard partitions, where an oversized hole or the wrong plug leaves a fixing that feels tight on the day and works loose under a loaded shelf a month later. The garden-city stock in Letchworth Garden City and central Welwyn keeps a lot of original lime-based plaster, which will chip out around the hole unless the bit and the speed are right.
The county's older market towns — Hertford, Ware, Bishop's Stortford, Berkhamsted and Tring — mix timber frame, soft brick and later render, so a single room can hold three wall types. Add the commuter-belt conversions around Rickmansworth, Chorleywood and Radlett, where lofts and garages have been turned into rooms with wiring and pipework in unpredictable runs, and detecting before drilling stops being a formality. Several of these towns also sit in conservation areas, which matters when a fixing goes anywhere near a window reveal on a listed frontage.

Hanging in Hertfordshire — your questions.
Can you hang shelves in a new-build with thin partition walls?
Yes. We locate the studs and fix into them wherever the position allows; where it does not, we use load-rated cavity anchors and tell you what weight the result will genuinely take.
Do you fit blinds in deep new-build reveals?
Yes, and we measure the reveal depth first so the blind clears the window handle and the trickle vent rather than fouling them.
Can you hang a gallery wall of mixed frames?
That is one of the most common bookings. The arrangement is laid out on the floor and agreed with you before any hole is drilled.
What about listed or conservation-area properties?
We work carefully and reversibly where we can, and flag anything we think needs consent instead of drilling and leaving you with the problem.
Do you take the packaging away?
Blind and shelf packaging is flattened and stacked as part of the job; removal can be added as a separate priced collection.
