Berkshire moves rarely go wrong because of the lifting. They go wrong because the van cannot get within fifty metres of the front door. The county is six unitary authorities with very different street patterns — Reading, Slough, Bracknell Forest, Wokingham, West Berkshire and the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead — and each one handles moving-day parking its own way.
Sort parking first, not last
If you are moving in or out of a controlled parking zone — most of central Reading, large parts of Slough, and the streets around Windsor and Maidenhead town centres — you cannot simply leave a Luton van on a residents' bay for four hours. Each council operates some form of dispensation, suspension or visitor permit for removals, and they all want notice: typically several working days, sometimes longer at the start of the month. Search your own council's site for "removal van parking dispensation" and do it as soon as your completion or tenancy date is confirmed.
Two situations catch people out every year:
- Windsor on an event day. Road closures around the castle and the Long Walk, and race days at Royal Windsor Racecourse, can make a planned route unusable. Check before you fix the date if you can.
- Reading's terraced grid. The streets off the Oxford Road and around Cemetery Junction are narrow, permit-controlled and parked solid by mid-evening. An early start is worth more than an extra pair of hands.
Access constraints that change the quote
Be honest about these when you get a price, because a surveyor who finds them on the day will charge for them anyway:
- Riverside and lane access in places like Sonning, Wargrave, Cookham and Bray, where a large vehicle genuinely cannot make the turn and the job needs a shuttle with a smaller van.
- New-build estates around Bracknell, Wokingham and the Newbury fringe, where the roads are adopted late, parking bays are undersized and construction traffic blocks the entrance.
- Flats without a lift, or with a lift too short for a mattress. Count the floors and measure the lift.
- Loft conversions with a tight dog-leg staircase — common in Reading and Slough conversions. Wardrobes and sofa beds that went up before a bannister was replaced sometimes do not come down.
A timeline that works
Four weeks out: confirm the date, book the removal, apply for parking dispensations at both ends, and tell your broadband provider — the switch takes longer than anything else on the list.
Two weeks out: book a household recycling centre slot or a bulky collection for whatever is not coming. West Berkshire and several neighbouring authorities operate booking systems for their tips, and the weekend slots go first.
One week out: pack everything except the kitchen and one box per person. Label by room in the new house, not the old one.
The day before: defrost the freezer, take meter readings, and set aside the box that holds kettle, mugs, chargers, toilet roll and the tools for rebuilding beds.
Cleaning at both ends
If you are renting, the end-of-tenancy clean happens after the van leaves. If you are buying, a deep clean of the empty property before your furniture arrives is the easiest it will ever be to do — floors, inside cupboards, the oven and the bathrooms with nothing in the way.
