What we can show you for Thame

  • Thame access and housing notes

OX9 housing stock and loading reality, written for Thame rather than the county.

Man with a Van in Thame: what actually matters here

A South Oxfordshire market town with one of the widest historic market streets in the region and a largely conservation-area core.

The housing stock is Timber-framed, brick and rendered period property along the High Street and Cornmarket, much of it listed; post-war housing off Moreton Avenue and Chinnor Road; and modern estates on the southern and eastern edges, which decides the tools, protection and crew size we bring to a man with a van job.

The wide High Street is a genuine advantage most days — there is room to stop and load — but market day and event closures remove it entirely, so we check the date before quoting a town-centre job. The listed frontages behind it are the real constraint: narrow doors, tight turns on stairs and floors that need boarding. The outer estates are ordinary van-at-the-door work. South Oxfordshire District Council sets parking and bulky collections.

Our Thame footprint runs across OX9 and takes in Thame Town Centre, Moreton Avenue and Lea Park, all on the same man with a van pricing.

Thame is a smaller town, and addresses around The broad High Street and Upper High Street, wide enough to have held the market for centuries in particular tend to need the access details confirmed before the van is loaded — we ask about that at quote stage, not on the day.

What a man with a van job includes

Man with a van is a driver plus a van, charged by the hour with a two-hour minimum, and it suits any load smaller than a full house: a one-bed flat, a student move, a marketplace collection or a run to storage. Two crew can be sent for stairs or heavy items, and the clock starts when we arrive at the pickup address.

The van and crew

  • Luton or long-wheelbase van with a tail-lift or ramp, swept out before every job
  • Driver who carries as well as drives — a second porter is bookable by the hour
  • Trolleys, straps and transit blankets carried as standard
  • Goods in transit cover of £10k per load and £1m public liability

Loading and transport

  • Furniture blanket-wrapped and strapped to the van wall, not stacked loose
  • Mattresses bagged and TVs and mirrors carried upright between boards
  • Sofas, beds and flat-pack dismantled and rebuilt where that is the only way through a doorway
  • Direct drive — your load is never consolidated with anyone else's

At the other end

  • Boxes placed in the room you label, beds and tables reassembled where we took them apart, packaging taken away
  • A signed job sheet with start and finish times, so hours are never in dispute

What changes the price on a man with a van job

  • Volume is easy to underestimate. A one-bed flat with a full loft is a two-load job in a single van; send photos and we will say whether it fits in one run.
  • Parking, congestion charge and ULEZ where genuinely incurred are listed separately at cost and never marked up. We do not carry hazardous goods, fuel or paint tins, and pianos, safes and gym equipment are a specialist quote.
  • Parking decides the price more than distance does: a suspended bay, a permit or a long carry from legal parking adds time, and we price that up front.
  • Floor level matters. Third floor with no lift is a slower carry, so tell us the level at both ends and we send the right number of crew.

Was able to hire a van and driver at very short notice. Great value for money. Driver went above and beyond what he should've been expected to do based on my initial description of the job required. The driver also had excellent communication skills and kept me updated at every stage. Office staff very helpful… Read in full →

Common questions

Thame questions, answered.

  • How quickly can you book man with a van in Thame?

Same-week slots are standard in Thame, with next-day often available midweek. Month-end tenancy changeovers are the busiest window across Oxfordshire, so book those a week or two ahead.

  • How many hours should I book?

A studio or small one-bed with a straightforward carry is usually two to three hours; a full one-bed with a garage or loft is typically four to five. We bill the time actually used in 30-minute blocks after the two-hour minimum.

  • Will you help carry, or is it just the driving?

The driver carries — that is the difference between us and a van-hire firm. If the job needs two pairs of hands, book the van with two movers and it usually finishes quicker and cheaper.

  • Do you take furniture away or to the tip as part of the move?

We can take a small amount of unwanted furniture at the same visit, charged separately because it goes to a licensed transfer station and we pay by weight. We are an Environment Agency registered waste carrier (CBDU300454) and you get the transfer note.

  • What happens if something is damaged?

Goods in transit cover of £10k per load applies to everything we put in the van, alongside £1m public liability. Anything raised within 24 hours is put right under our complaints policy.

  • Can you do same-day, evening or weekend collections?

Often, yes — same-day depends on where the van already is that morning. Out-of-hours and weekend slots are charged at 1.25× the standard hourly rate, told to you before you book.
