Moving a single item in London: sofas, mattresses and marketplace buys in Hoxton N1

A single item collected and delivered locally in London is £69, or £75 for a marketplace or IKEA collection where we deal with the seller or the trade counter. Measure the item, the narrowest doorway and the stairwell turn before you buy — that is the check that decides whether it can come in at all.

What this means in Hoxton N1

Same guide, local numbers. Here is how it reads for this postcode. Hoxton sits in Hackney, covering N1, and the local housing mix decides most of what a man with a van day actually costs.

Households in Hoxton
7,353
Homes that are flats
96.4%
Households renting privately
32.6%

Housing stock

96.4% of homes here are flats, so man with a van in Hoxton is usually a stairs-and-landings job: carry distance from the van to the door does more to the price than the mileage across London ever will.

Single items in Hoxton

Marketplace pickups are the most common single-item job around Hoxton N1, and the risk is always the same: the sofa that will not turn on the landing. 96.4% of homes in Hoxton are flats, so the carry — lift or stairs, floor number, distance from the legal stopping point to the door — moves the price far more than the mileage does, so we ask for door widths and a photo of the stair turn before quoting a flat-pack-shaped item into a flat-heavy street.

Timing and access at both ends

A single-item run is priced on both addresses, not one. Hoxton is outside the Congestion Charge zone and inside ULEZ, so the access cost worth planning is a bay suspension with London Borough of Hackney — around ten working days' notice. 32.6% of households here rent privately, above the London average, so Hoxton moves in tenancy cycles: the last Friday and Saturday of the month go first. Where the seller can only hand over in the evening, an out-of-hours slot in Hackney is usually cheaper than a Saturday one.

How often people move

32.6% of Hoxton households rent privately, above the London average, so weekends and month-ends book out first and inventory checks matter as much as the lorry does.

Access, charges and parking

Hoxton is outside the Congestion Charge zone and inside ULEZ, so the only access cost worth planning for is parking: a bay suspension in N1 takes around ten working days with Hackney.

The guide

Moving a Single Item in London: Sofas, Mattresses and Marketplace Buys in full

How a single-item booking works

You send us the item, the collection address and the delivery address. We quote a fixed price rather than an hourly rate, because the job has a known shape: load, drive, carry in.

For marketplace buys we can collect from the seller directly, including paying them on collection by prior arrangement. You get a message when the item is in the van and again when it is on its way to you.

Measure three things before you buy

The item is the easy measurement. The two that catch people out are the narrowest doorway on the route and the turn at the top or bottom of the stairs — particularly in Victorian conversions, where the return is often narrower than the door.

Write down width, height and depth for the item, then the door width, the hallway width and the stairwell turn. If the item's smallest dimension is bigger than the narrowest point, it does not go in, and no amount of angling changes that.

  • Item: width, height, depth — and diagonal depth for a sofa
  • Narrowest doorway on the route, including the communal front door
  • Stairwell: width and the turn radius at each half-landing
  • Lift: internal depth and door width, if there is one

What we move most often

Sofas and armchairs, mattresses and bed frames, wardrobes and chests of drawers, fridge freezers and washing machines, desks, bookcases, pianos on request, bikes, and the enormous mirror that will not fit in a taxi.

Everything travels blanket-wrapped and strapped. Flat-pack collected from a store stays boxed; second-hand furniture is wrapped before it goes in the van, not after it has rubbed against something.

Want the hourly rate confirmed before you book?

Send us the item list, both addresses and the access at each end — a fixed hourly quote comes back the same day.

When a sofa genuinely will not fit

It happens, and the honest answer matters more than the optimistic one. Most sofas can be brought in with the feet off and the item on its end. Some cannot, and then the choices are a specialist hoist, a window removal, or returning the item.

Send us photos of the item and the entrance before you commit to buying. Two minutes of measuring at that stage is worth more than any amount of problem-solving on the doorstep.

Dismantling, disposal and the old sofa

We can dismantle and reassemble beds, wardrobes and flat-pack at £25 an item, added to a single-item booking without changing it into an hourly job.

What we cannot do on a van booking is take the old item away as waste — that needs a licensed waste carrier. Our clearance team handles it and can often attend the same day, so the new sofa arrives and the old one leaves within a couple of hours of each other.

House removals or man with a van in Hoxton N1? side by side

Two different jobs, two different price shapes. This is how they compare for this address, and where the crossover sits.

Most Hoxton N1 moves are a van job

96% of homes in Hoxton N1 are flats and 38% of households are one person. Homes in Hackney average 2.21 bedrooms, and 65% have one or two. That is the studio, one-bed and room-move profile an hourly van handles best — you only pay for the hours the job actually takes.

From £45/hr

One mover + Luton van, 2-hour minimum

Studios, one-beds, room moves and single items around Hoxton and the rest of N1.

  • Priced by the hour, so a short Hoxton N1 hop costs less than a cross-London run
  • Studio or one-bed flat move from £220, single item from £69
  • One or two movers, one Luton van, usually bookable within a few days
  • Best when you have packed yourself and the inventory fits one load

House removals

From £420

Fixed price after a video survey

Two-bed flats upwards, family homes and chain completions in Hoxton.

  • Fixed price agreed before the day — no hourly clock while you finish packing
  • 2-bed house from £520, 3-bed from £690, 4-bed from £950
  • Full crew, 7.5-tonne lorry, written inventory and goods-in-transit cover
  • Packing, dismantling and storage between completion dates can be added

The crossover sits at roughly a two-bed load: below it an hourly van almost always wins on price, above it a fixed-price crew wins on time and on the risk of a second trip. If a Luton van (about 500 cubic feet) would need more than one run between your two Hoxton N1 addresses, book the removals crew.

Can you fit everything in one Luton van?

If yes, book the van and pay by the hour. If it needs a second trip, the removals crew is cheaper and finishes the same day.

Are you still packing this week?

An hourly booking charges for the wait. A fixed-price removals job with packing added protects you from that.

Is there a chain, or a same-day completion?

Chains in Hackney slip. A fixed price with waiting time and overnight storage built in is the safer booking.

Is it one bulky item or a marketplace collection?

That is a van job — from £69 in Hoxton N1, no survey needed.
