Clearance & Disposal in Hertfordshire
Clearance is our most-regulated division and we run it that way. We clear whole houses, single rooms, flats, garages, lofts, sheds, gardens and offices, priced on volume — how much of the van the load fills — plus access and any items that must be handled separately. You get a written price before we arrive, and a waste transfer note for the load, which is the document that proves your waste was handled legally. Photographs or a short video are usually enough for us to quote accurately without a site visit.
Sorting happens on the way out, not at the tip. Reusable furniture and appliances are separated for reuse where they are genuinely in reusable condition, metal, wood, cardboard and green waste are segregated, and fridges, freezers, air-conditioning units, mattresses, tyres, paint and gas bottles are handled as the separate streams they legally are — they cannot go into a mixed load. Bereavement and downsizing clearances are worked slowly and quietly, with paperwork, photographs and small personal items set aside for the family rather than tipped.
Where our Hertfordshire clearance cover is strongest
Watford (WD17–WD19, WD24–WD25), Hemel Hempstead (HP1–HP3) and St Albans (AL1, AL3, AL4) carry the densest cover, with Stevenage (SG1–SG2), Welwyn Garden City (AL7–AL8), Hatfield (AL9–AL10), Hertford (SG13–SG14) and Bishop's Stortford (CM23) served on the same terms.
Hitchin (SG4–SG5), Letchworth (SG6), Baldock (SG7), Borehamwood (WD6), Bushey (WD23), Rickmansworth (WD3), Cheshunt (EN7–EN8) and Hoddesdon (EN11) complete the county. Garage, loft and single-room clearances are often combined with a removal or an end-of-tenancy clean on the same visit, which is cheaper than booking the two separately.
Why a Hertfordshire recycling centre will not take your clearance
Hertfordshire County Council runs the county's household waste recycling centres, and access is controlled by a free ePass registered to a Hertfordshire address and a specific vehicle. Cars, vans and trailers all need one, and van and trailer permits are capped at a limited number of visits per year rather than being open-ended. Crucially, the centres take household waste from residents only: waste produced by a business, or waste carried on someone's behalf by a contractor, is trade waste and is not accepted, whichever vehicle turns up. That is the practical reason a full house clearance cannot be self-served through a recycling centre — and the reason a cheap van that offers to take it away without paperwork is a risk to you, not to them, because fly-tipped waste is traced back to the household it came from.
We hold a waste carrier registration, tip at licensed commercial transfer stations rather than household centres, and issue a transfer note for every load. Bulky-waste collections from your district council — Watford, St Albans City and District, Dacorum, Stevenage, Welwyn Hatfield, East Herts, North Herts, Three Rivers, Hertsmere and Broxbourne each run their own — are a reasonable and cheap option for two or three items on a fixed collection date. Where a whole property, a hoarded room, a garage full of unsorted material or a same-week deadline is involved, a licensed clearance is the practical route, and we will say plainly which of the two suits your job when you ask.

Clearance & Disposal in Hertfordshire, answered.
Do I need an ePass to use a Hertfordshire recycling centre?
Yes — Hertfordshire County Council requires a free ePass registered to a Hertfordshire address for vehicles using its household waste recycling centres, with van and trailer passes limited to a set number of visits per year. It only covers your own household waste, so it cannot be used for waste a contractor is carrying for you.
Can a recycling centre take waste from my house clearance?
Not when a contractor is carrying it. Once waste is collected by a business on your behalf it is trade waste, and Hertfordshire's household centres do not accept it. That is why licensed clearance companies tip at commercial transfer stations and issue you a waste transfer note.
What is a waste transfer note and why does it matter?
It is the legal record of who took your waste, when, and where it went. If waste from your property is later fly-tipped, the note is what shows you passed it to a licensed carrier. We issue one for every load as standard — always ask any clearance company for both their carrier registration and the note.
How is a Hertfordshire clearance priced?
By volume — the proportion of the van the load fills — plus access and any items needing separate disposal, such as fridges, freezers, mattresses, tyres, paint or gas bottles. Send photographs or a short walkthrough video and we will quote from those; the price then holds unless the load is materially larger than shown.
Should I use my council's bulky collection instead?
For two or three items on a date that suits you, often yes — your district council collection will usually be cheaper. For a whole property, a garage or loft of unsorted material, or anything on a short deadline, a licensed clearance is the practical option. Tell us what you have and we will say honestly which one fits.
Can you handle a bereavement or downsizing clearance sensitively?
Yes, and it is a large part of what we do. We work to your pace, set aside documents, photographs and small personal items for the family, separate anything with resale or donation value, and can clear room by room over more than one visit rather than emptying a house in a single day.
