Working in London
Flat conversions across Hackney, Lewisham, Ealing and Brent are usually plasterboard dabbed onto old brick with a 20–30mm void behind. A standard plug spins in that void and a heavy mirror pulls the board off the wall in one piece.
We through-fix into the masonry behind, or span two studs with a French cleat. The board never takes the load.
Victorian and Edwardian houses in Islington, Camden, Wandsworth and Haringey often still have lath-and-plaster ceilings and upper-floor partitions. It crumbles when it is drilled without support and it will not hold a toggle reliably.
Here we find the timber studs with a scanner and a fine pilot, and fix into them rather than trusting the plaster face.
Southwark, Tower Hamlets and Newham are full of 1960s–80s blocks with concrete panel walls and steel lintels. These hold anything, but only with SDS drilling and the correct anchor, and the dust needs extraction so it does not settle on a freshly decorated wall.
We carry both, plus resin anchors for the aerated blockwork found in later new-builds around Nine Elms and the Olympic Park.
Most London leases and tenancy agreements limit what a tenant can fix to a wall. Where holes are a problem we fit a picture rail or a gallery track: two fixings instead of twenty, and the whole arrangement can be moved without touching the plaster again.
At the end of a tenancy we can return, take the system down, fill and sand the holes flush so the check-out report stays clean.
