What a handyman can and cannot legally do in the UK

Most disputes about handyman work are scope disputes, not price disputes. Someone books a handyman for a job that legally needs a registered trade, and finds out on the day.

This guide draws that line before you book, so nothing on your list is a surprise.

Squarely handyman work

Flat-pack assembly, TV and shelf mounting, mirrors and artwork, curtain poles and blinds, door easing and hinge adjustment, silicone renewal, tap washers, toilet seats, draught-proofing, child safety fittings and picture rails are all standard handyman work.

Needs a registered trade

New circuits, consumer unit work and anything notifiable under Part P belongs to a registered electrician. Any work on gas appliances or pipework belongs to a Gas Safe engineer.

Removing or notching a load-bearing wall, or altering a structural opening, needs a structural engineer and building control — not a handyman with a multi-tool.

Grey areas, answered

Swapping a like-for-like light fitting or socket faceplate on an existing circuit is generally fine outside notifiable zones; a new spur is not. Where a job sits on the line, we say so at quote stage and either arrange the right trade or hand the job back rather than take it on.

A like-for-like swap on an existing circuit is usually within scope. New circuits, consumer unit work and anything notifiable under Part P need a registered electrician, and we will tell you which side of the line your job falls on before you book.
