Dismantling a bed, wardrobe or desk before a move, or taking down a unit that is being replaced, is booked the same way and is usually quicker than the original build. The tradesperson brings their own tools, fixings and consumables, and the packaging from the job is flattened and stacked.
The build
- Cartons opened, parts counted against the instructions and missing items flagged before the build starts
- Assembly to the manufacturer's sequence, with cam locks and dowels seated properly rather than forced
- Doors, drawers and hinges adjusted so they sit square and close level
- Wardrobe and bookcase anti-tip brackets fixed to the wall — the step most self-builds skip
Dismantling
- Beds, wardrobes, desks and shelving taken apart in the reverse of the build sequence so panels are not stressed or split

What changes the price on a furniture assembly job
- Big items need floor space to build. Clear the room first — an assembly done in a 1m gap between boxes takes noticeably longer.
- If several items are booked at once, the half day at £125 or the full day at £240 is usually better value than stacking hourly jobs, and we will point that out when you book.
- Wall type decides whether a wardrobe or shelf is safe. Plasterboard with no timber behind it needs the right anchor and a load judgement; if we think the wall will not hold what you want on it, we say so instead of fitting it anyway.
- Missing or damaged parts are the most common cause of an unfinished build. Unbox and check the parts list before the visit and a one-hour job stays a one-hour job.
- Some flat-pack does not survive being dismantled twice — chipboard cam housings and glued dowels in particular. We will tell you before we start if we think a piece is unlikely to rebuild well, so you can decide whether it is worth moving at all.
- Older houses are rarely square. Walls that lean and floors that fall mean fitted units need scribing and packing, which is real time on top of the flat-pack instructions.
