Why London is a harder job than most of the UK
Most of London is supplied with hard to very hard water (around 250–350 mg/l calcium carbonate), which is why kettles fur, dishwasher spray arms block and washing-machine heaters scale far faster here than in soft-water parts of the UK. Descaling is part of the method on every relevant appliance, not an upsell.
Every appliance that heats water — kettle, coffee machine, washing machine, dishwasher — is fighting scale here in a way it would not be in Manchester or Glasgow. That changes the maintenance rhythm below, and it is the reason descaling is included as standard on every wet appliance we clean rather than sold as an extra.

Appliance cleaning questions, answered
A non-caustic, biodegradable oven gel with proper dwell time. Caustic soda products work quickly but strip self-clean and pyrolytic liners, dull aluminium trims and give off fumes that mean leaving the property. Time and the right chemistry beat aggression every time.
Because the smell almost always lives in a fold or a filter rather than on a surface: the washing-machine door seal, the dishwasher filter and spray arms, the fridge drain channel and gasket, or a saturated extractor carbon filter. Clean those five and the smell goes.
Kettles monthly, coffee machines every four to eight weeks, and washing machines and dishwashers every two to three months. London's supply is hard to very hard at around 250–350 mg/l calcium carbonate, so scale builds far faster here than in soft-water regions.
No — dishwasher detergent dulls the chrome and it will not shift baked carbon anyway. An overnight soak in hot water and biological washing powder is the DIY method that works; heated immersion is the professional one.
Greasy brown film will, once the inner panes are separated and cleaned on both faces. Heat discolouration and scratches will not, because the material itself has changed. A reputable cleaner tells you which one you have before starting.
When the parts need heated immersion (racks, cast grates, loaded hood filters), when the fan cover needs to come off, when a range cooker or Aga is involved, or when a check-out photo report is required. Weekly maintenance is genuinely DIY; the annual reset is not.
