What this guide covers

Almost every carpet stain is decided in the first sixty seconds, long before anyone reaches for a product. This guide covers three things: exactly what to do the moment something goes on the floor, which chemistry actually lifts each of the forty stains in the A–Z below, and an honest account of the handful that nobody — professional or otherwise — can bring back.

It is written from what our technicians actually do in London homes every week, put in writing rather than kept in a van. That includes the parts nobody sells: the stains where the best advice is to stop, the household tricks that quietly make things worse, and the difference between a stain sitting on a fibre and damage where the colour has already gone.

First response

The first 60 seconds

Do these seven things before you work out what the stain is. They apply to every spill on every carpet, and they are the difference between a mark that lifts and one that never does.
  1. 1. Blot — never rub

    Press a folded white cloth or plain kitchen roll straight down onto the spill and lift. Repeat with a dry section until no more transfers.

    Why: Rubbing untwists the pile and leaves a permanently fuzzy patch, and it pushes the spill sideways and downwards at the same time.

  2. 2. Work from the outside in

    Start at the edge of the mark and move towards the middle on every pass.

    Why: Working outwards enlarges the stain into a ring that is far harder to blend back than the original spot.

  3. 3. Use a white cloth or plain kitchen roll

    No patterned tea towels, no coloured cloths, no printed kitchen roll.

    Why: A damp coloured cloth transfers its own dye into wet carpet — we are regularly called to a blue smear left by the towel, not the spill.

  4. 4. Cold water first, always

    Dilute with cold water before you reach for any product, and only then decide what the stain is.

    Why: Heat cooks protein stains such as milk, blood and egg permanently into the fibre, and there is no route back from that.

  5. 5. Weight and wait on big spills

    For a large liquid spill, cover with a thick pad of kitchen roll, stand a heavy book on it and leave it for an hour.

    Why: Capillary action pulls liquid up out of the backing and underlay, which is where the stain would otherwise wick back from days later.

  6. 6. Test every product on a hidden patch

    Inside a wardrobe, under the sofa or on an offcut — apply, wait ten minutes, blot with white cloth and check for colour transfer.

    Why: Most permanent damage we are called out to was caused by the product, not the spill.

  7. 7. Never apply heat to an unknown stain

    No steam cleaner, no hairdryer, no hot water until you know which family the stain belongs to.

    Why: Heat sets protein and drives grease deeper; on an unknown stain it is a one-way bet you can only lose.

Safety — read before you mix anything

  • Never mix cleaning products. Bleach with ammonia or with an acidic cleaner such as vinegar or limescale remover produces toxic gas — this is the single most dangerous thing people do while spot cleaning.
  • Ventilate the room whenever you use a solvent, and take breaks. Surgical spirit, white spirit and acetone-free remover all need moving air.
  • Keep children and pets off any treated area until it is completely dry, including enzyme and solvent treatments.
  • Wear gloves with solvent products, and keep them off skin and away from naked flames.
  • If a product label contradicts anything on this page, follow the label — formulations change.

Know your enemy

The four stain families

Almost every household stain belongs to one of four families, and the family — not the brand of spray — decides what works. If you can name the family, you already know the method.
Tannin

Acid side, cool water, never soap first.

Wine, tea, coffee, fruit juice and beer are plant tannins. They are water-soluble while wet, which is why speed matters more than product. Treat them acid-side — a splash of white vinegar in cool water, or a dedicated tannin spotter — and rinse. Alkaline detergents and soap-based sprays set tannins and leave a yellow shadow that gets harder to shift every week it sits.

Protein

Cold water and enzymes. Heat sets it permanently.

Blood, milk, egg, vomit, urine and most food spills are protein. Protein coagulates when it is heated, exactly like an egg hitting a pan — once cooked into the fibre, it is there for good. Cold water only, then an enzyme cleaner that digests the residue rather than dissolving it. Never take a steam cleaner or a kettle to an untreated protein stain.

Grease and oil

Absorb the bulk first, then a solvent or surfactant.

Cooking oil, butter, make-up, shoe polish and candle wax will not dissolve in water — plain water spreads them and drives them deeper into the pile. Lift the bulk with a spoon or an absorbent powder, then break the residue with a solvent spotter or a drop of washing-up liquid in warm water. Grease stains that are left attract dry soil, which is why they darken over weeks.

Dye and pigment

The dangerous family — wrong move and you set it for good.

Ink, curry, hair dye, felt tip, fake tan and some cordials carry a dye designed to bond with fibre. That is the whole point of a dye, and your carpet is a fibre. Blot, do not flood, keep the area small, and stop early — most permanent carpet damage we are called out to is a dye stain someone scrubbed with the wrong product for twenty minutes. This family is where a professional earns their money.

Rule of thumb for a mystery stain: if it came from a plant, treat it as tannin; if it came from an animal or a person, treat it as protein and keep everything cold; if it feels slippery or darkens the pile without colouring it, treat it as grease; and if it is a colour that was designed to stay a colour, treat it as dye and stop early.

Red wine

Tannin

Plant tannin carrying anthocyanin pigment — water-soluble while wet, oxidising to brown as it dries.

First response
Blot hard with white kitchen roll, outside-in, and keep swapping to a dry sheet until no more colour transfers.
What works
Mix one tablespoon of white vinegar and one teaspoon of washing-up liquid into 500ml of cool water. Apply a little at a time, blot, repeat. Finish with plain cool water to rinse, then weight a dry towel over it for an hour.
Makes it worse
Salt (it drives pigment into the backing), hot water, and scrubbing — which untwists the pile and leaves a permanent fuzzy halo.
Pro verdict
Fresh spills usually come out completely. Dried and oxidised wine, especially on a light twist pile, often lifts to a faint shadow rather than nothing at all — we will tell you which you have before we start.

Wool caution. Never use oxi or bleach-based wine removers on wool; they strip dye. Cool water and a WoolSafe tannin spotter only.

White wine

Tannin

A near-colourless tannin with sugars that turn sticky and attract soil as they dry.

First response
Blot the liquid, then rinse the patch with cool water even though you cannot see a mark.
What works
Cool water with a teaspoon of washing-up liquid, applied lightly and blotted out. Rinse with plain water and dry under a weighted towel.
Makes it worse
Leaving it because it looks invisible — the sugar residue turns into a dark traffic patch within a fortnight.
Pro verdict
Straightforward. Extraction removes the sugar residue that a household blot leaves behind, which is the real reason old white wine patches go grey.

Beer

Tannin

Tannin plus malt sugars and yeast — the smell is the yeast, not the colour.

First response
Blot, then rinse with cool water rather than leaving it to dry.
What works
One tablespoon of white vinegar in 500ml of cool water, blotted in and out, then a plain-water rinse. Vinegar deals with the odour as well as the mark.
Makes it worse
Warm water and detergent alone, which sets the sugars and leaves a sticky patch that resoils fast.
Pro verdict
Easy for extraction. Deep-soaked beer in an underlay after a party may need a flood-rinse and an odour treatment.

Coffee

Tannin

Tannin, and with milk in it a protein stain as well — two chemistries in one spill.

First response
Blot immediately with white cloth, working from the edge inwards. Do not add hot water.
What works
Cool water first to dilute, then one tablespoon of white vinegar plus a teaspoon of washing-up liquid in 500ml of cool water. Blot, rinse, weight and dry.
Makes it worse
Hot water on a milky coffee — it cooks the protein into the fibre and turns a 10-minute job into a permanent tea-coloured ring.
Pro verdict
Fresh coffee lifts completely. Set-in black coffee on a beige carpet often needs a heated tannin spotter and controlled dwell time; expect a very good result rather than a guaranteed perfect one.

Wool caution. Wool takes tannin readily. Treat it within minutes and keep the moisture low.

Tea

Tannin

The purest tannin stain there is — the same compound that stains a mug brown.

First response
Blot, then dilute with cool water and blot again.
What works
White vinegar solution as for coffee, one tablespoon in 500ml of cool water. Repeat in light passes rather than one soaking.
Makes it worse
Soap-heavy sprays and alkaline all-purpose cleaners, which fix tannin and leave a yellow cast.
Pro verdict
Very treatable, even after months, because tannin responds to acid-side chemistry and heat under controlled conditions.

Cola and soft drinks

Tannin

Caramel colouring, phosphoric acid and a lot of sugar.

First response
Blot the liquid out, then rinse — the sugar matters more than the colour.
What works
Warm (not hot) water with a teaspoon of washing-up liquid, blotted in and out several times, then two plain-water rinses to get all the sugar out.
Makes it worse
A single wipe and walking away. Residual sugar is a soil magnet and the patch reappears as a dark ring.
Pro verdict
Simple. Most call-outs for old cola marks are really resoiling over sugar, and extraction rinses it out for good.

Fruit juice and berries

Dye and pigment

Natural anthocyanin dye — blackcurrant and cherry behave like a deliberate fabric dye.

First response
Blot, do not flood. Spreading the wet edge spreads the dye.
What works
Cool water with a teaspoon of washing-up liquid, blotted from the outside in. Blackcurrant cordial on a light carpet is often beyond household kit — stop before you spread it.
Makes it worse
Hot water and vigorous rubbing, which pushes dye through to the backing where it wicks back up for weeks.
Pro verdict
Dye-reduction work with controlled chemistry lifts most of it. Blackcurrant on cream nylon is one of the few domestic stains where we quote honestly for improvement rather than removal.

Chocolate

Grease and oil

Cocoa solids and cocoa butter — a pigment stain riding on a grease stain.

First response
Let it harden (a bag of frozen peas speeds this up), then lift the solids with a blunt knife.
What works
Once the bulk is off, use warm water with a teaspoon of washing-up liquid to break the fat, blot, then treat any remaining brown tint with a cool vinegar solution.
Makes it worse
Attacking it while soft and warm — you grind cocoa butter into the base of the pile.
Pro verdict
Reliable. Heated extraction with a solvent pre-spray removes the fat film that household cleaning leaves behind.

Curry and turmeric

Dye and pigment

Curcumin — a genuine dye, oil-carried, and one of the most stubborn stains in any home.

First response
Lift the solids with a spoon. Blot the oil. Do not add water yet.
What works
Washing-up liquid in warm water to remove the oil carrier first, then blot. Curcumin fades in UV light, so an unexpectedly effective trick is to leave the treated patch in daylight for a few days.
Makes it worse
Scrubbing, and any bleach-based product on a coloured carpet — you swap a yellow stain for a bleached one.
Pro verdict
This is a genuine specialist job. We can usually reduce curry substantially with a dye-specific reducing agent and controlled heat, but nobody honest guarantees full removal of set-in turmeric.

Wool caution. On wool, reducing agents must be used with care and neutralised properly — this is not a DIY chemistry set.

Tomato sauce and bolognese

Tannin

Lycopene pigment in an oily, acidic base — tannin behaviour with a grease component.

First response
Spoon the solids off, blot the moisture, work outside-in.
What works
Washing-up liquid in warm water to lift the oil, blot; then a cool vinegar solution for the remaining orange tint. Two light rounds beat one heavy soaking.
Makes it worse
Hot water on a meat sauce — the protein in the mince cooks into the fibre alongside the pigment.
Pro verdict
Very good results normally. Old ketchup on a pale carpet may leave a faint warm cast we will point out before quoting.

Fat and cooking oil

Grease and oil

Triglyceride oil, insoluble in water, which is why plain water only spreads it.

First response
Cover with bicarbonate of soda or cornflour and leave 15 minutes to absorb the bulk. Vacuum off.
What works
Dab with a small amount of washing-up liquid in warm water, blot, repeat. A dry-cleaning solvent spotter on a white cloth handles what surfactant leaves behind.
Makes it worse
Rinsing with water first, which floats the oil outward into a much larger, fainter ring.
Pro verdict
Solvent pre-spray plus heated extraction removes oil properly. The reason old oil marks look grey is trapped soil, and that comes out with the oil.

Butter

Grease and oil

Dairy fat with a protein fraction — grease first, protein second.

First response
Chill it, scrape the solid off, then blot.
What works
Warm water with washing-up liquid to lift the fat, blot dry, then a cool enzyme spray for the milk-protein residue that causes any lingering smell.
Makes it worse
Hot water straight on, which melts the fat deeper and sets the protein.
Pro verdict
Straightforward with solvent and extraction; the odour side needs the enzyme step, which most households skip.

Egg

Protein

Albumin protein — it literally cooks.

First response
Scrape the solids, blot with cold water. Cold, always.
What works
Cold water with a teaspoon of washing-up liquid, blotted repeatedly, then an enzyme cleaner left to dwell for ten minutes and blotted out.
Makes it worse
Any heat at all, including a steam cleaner. Cooked albumin is mechanically bonded to the fibre and no chemistry reverses it.
Pro verdict
Enzyme flooding with controlled dwell time, then cool extraction. Excellent results if nobody has applied heat first.

Milk

Protein

Casein protein and fat — the visible mark fades but the smell does not.

First response
Blot everything you can with cold water and a white cloth before it soaks into the underlay.
What works
Cold water rinse, blot, then an enzyme cleaner to digest the casein. Weight a dry towel on it overnight to pull moisture out of the backing.
Makes it worse
Deodorising spray over the top. It perfumes the room for a day and the sour smell returns.
Pro verdict
Deep milk in underlay is a common call-out. Enzyme flooding and sub-surface extraction is the honest fix; a surface clean will not do it.

Blood

Protein

Haemoglobin protein — bright red when fresh, oxidised brown once dry.

First response
Cold water on a white cloth, blot, repeat. Never warm.
What works
Cold water with a teaspoon of salt or a splash of clear ammonia-free spotter, blotted from the outside in. For a dried mark, re-wet with cold water for ten minutes to soften first, then blot. Hydrogen peroxide 3% works on light carpets but must be patch-tested — it can lighten dye.
Makes it worse
Hot water, and rubbing dried blood, which grinds oxidised protein deeper.
Pro verdict
Fresh blood comes out completely. Old oxidised blood usually lifts well with enzyme work and cool extraction, though a faint tan cast can remain on cream wool.

Wool caution. Skip peroxide entirely on wool. Cold water and an enzyme approved for protein fibres only.

Vomit

Protein

Protein plus stomach acid — the acid attacks carpet dye as well as staining it.

First response
Remove solids with a scraper and a bag, blot the liquid, then neutralise the acid quickly with cold water and a pinch of bicarbonate of soda.
What works
Cold water rinse, then an enzyme cleaner left to dwell 10–15 minutes, blotted out, then a final plain-water rinse. Ventilate and dry fast.
Makes it worse
Leaving the acid in the fibre while you fetch a mop — dye damage happens in the first hour, not the first day.
Pro verdict
Enzyme flooding, sub-surface extraction and odour work. Where acid has already stripped dye, that part is damage, not soiling.

Urine (human)

Protein

Urea and uric acid salts — the salts are the smell, and they reactivate in humidity.

First response
Blot hard with kitchen roll, standing on it to draw liquid out of the backing, then rinse with cold water.
What works
Cold water rinse, blot, then a proper enzyme cleaner applied generously enough to reach as deep as the urine did, dwelling 15 minutes before blotting.
Makes it worse
A quick surface spray. The urine went to the backing; if the enzyme does not, the smell comes back on the first warm day.
Pro verdict
Enzyme flooding and sub-surface extraction. Where it has reached the underlay we say so — that is a lift-and-replace conversation, not a cleaning one.

Pet urine (dogs and cats)

Protein

More concentrated than human urine, alkaline as it ages, and cat urine carries felinine which breaks down into sulphur compounds.

First response
Blot as much as physically possible, then rinse cold. Do not use anything ammonia-based — it smells like a marker to the animal and invites repeats.
What works
A veterinary-grade enzyme cleaner, applied in the same volume the animal produced, left 15–30 minutes and blotted. Repeat rather than scrub. Cover with a damp towel while it dwells so it does not dry early.
Makes it worse
Steam cleaning untreated pet urine, which sets the protein and locks the odour in permanently.
Pro verdict
Old urine needs enzyme flooding at volume plus sub-surface extraction, and we check with a UV lamp and a moisture meter first. Where odour has reached underlay or floorboards, no surface clean fixes it and we will tell you before you pay.

Faeces

Protein

Protein and bacteria — a hygiene job as much as a stain job.

First response
Gloves on. Lift solids with a scraper into a bag, without pressing anything into the pile.
What works
Cold water and washing-up liquid to lift residue, blot, then an enzyme sanitiser left to dwell. Finish with a plain-water rinse and dry thoroughly.
Makes it worse
Hot water, which sets the protein, and household bleach, which strips carpet dye.
Pro verdict
Sanitising treatment plus extraction. We treat this as a biohazard clean, not a spot clean, and we will not sign off odour where it has soaked below the backing.

Mud

Grease and oil

Mineral soil suspended in water — a dry particle problem once it dries.

First response
Do nothing while it is wet. Wet mud spreads; dry mud vacuums.
What works
Let it dry completely, break the crust gently, then vacuum thoroughly in several directions. Treat any remaining tint with washing-up liquid in warm water, blotted.
Makes it worse
Wiping wet mud with a cloth, which forces silt into the base of the pile where a vacuum cannot reach it.
Pro verdict
Easy — this is exactly what pre-vacuuming and extraction are for. Heavy clay soil in a hallway usually needs agitation before rinsing.

Grass

Dye and pigment

Chlorophyll — a natural dye bound to a protein carrier.

First response
Let mud dry off first, vacuum, then treat the green tint.
What works
Dab with a cloth dampened in surgical spirit, working outside-in, then follow with washing-up liquid in warm water and a plain rinse. Patch-test the spirit first.
Makes it worse
Water alone, which spreads the chlorophyll into a wider green shadow.
Pro verdict
Solvent spotting followed by extraction. Usually a complete removal on synthetic pile.

Ballpoint ink

Dye and pigment

Oil-based dye in a solvent carrier — it dissolves in alcohol, not water.

First response
Do not wet it. Blot any surface ink with a dry white cloth.
What works
Damp a white cloth with surgical spirit or a non-oily hairspray, dab (never rub) from the outside in, and change to a clean part of the cloth every dab so you lift ink rather than move it. Rinse with cool water and blot dry.
Makes it worse
Water first, and using the same patch of cloth twice — both spread the dye into a grey halo bigger than the original mark.
Pro verdict
Good odds with graduated solvent spotting. Large or set-in ballpoint on a light carpet may reduce to a shadow rather than clear completely.

Fountain pen ink

Dye and pigment

Water-based dye, sometimes iron-gall — soluble while wet, far harder once dry.

First response
Blot with dry kitchen roll, then cold water on a white cloth. Speed genuinely decides the outcome here.
What works
Cold water blotting, then a teaspoon of washing-up liquid and a splash of white vinegar in 300ml of cool water, dabbed and blotted repeatedly.
Makes it worse
Warm water and pressure, which drive water-soluble dye straight to the backing where it wicks back.
Pro verdict
Fresh spills clean up well. Dried iron-gall ink can leave a permanent rust-coloured trace we will point out honestly.

Permanent marker

Dye and pigment

Pigment in an alcohol-resin base, formulated to be permanent on porous surfaces.

First response
Blot dry. Accept that this is a reduction job, not a removal one.
What works
Surgical spirit on a white cloth, dabbing in tiny amounts with frequent cloth changes, working strictly outside-in over a small area. Stop as soon as transfer stops — repeated solvent on one spot can loosen backing adhesive.
Makes it worse
Flooding with solvent, which spreads a small dark mark into a large grey one and can delaminate the carpet.
Pro verdict
Honest answer: partial. We reduce marker considerably with graduated solvents; complete removal on light carpet is rare and we never promise it on the phone.

Felt tip

Dye and pigment

Usually a water-based dye, and usually a bright one designed to be seen.

First response
Blot dry, then cool water on a white cloth from the outside in.
What works
Cool water with washing-up liquid, dabbed and blotted. If colour keeps transferring, switch to surgical spirit on a fresh cloth and patch-test first.
Makes it worse
Scrubbing a child-sized doodle into a plate-sized pastel patch — small area, light hand, frequent cloth changes.
Pro verdict
Usually a good result with dye-reducing chemistry. Deep red and purple felt tip is the hardest to clear completely.

Wax crayon

Grease and oil

Pigment held in a paraffin wax — grease first, colour second.

First response
Scrape the raised wax off cold with a blunt knife.
What works
Lay brown paper or plain kitchen roll over the mark and press with an iron on its lowest setting for a few seconds at a time, moving to clean paper as the wax transfers. Treat the leftover pigment with washing-up liquid in warm water.
Makes it worse
A hot iron or holding it still, which melts synthetic pile and leaves a permanent glazed patch.
Pro verdict
Reliable. Solvent spotting handles the wax and the pigment together without any heat near the fibre.

Candle wax

Grease and oil

Paraffin or soy wax, often with a strong dye in coloured candles.

First response
Let it set hard — chill with a freezer block if you are impatient — then crack and lift the bulk.
What works
Brown paper and an iron on the lowest heat, a few seconds per pass, changing paper each time. Coloured candles leave dye behind, which needs a solvent spotter afterwards.
Makes it worse
High heat on polypropylene carpet. It melts at a lower temperature than most irons run at, and melted pile is permanent damage.
Pro verdict
Straightforward, and we do it without an iron. Coloured wax dye is the part that decides whether removal is complete.

Wool caution. Wool tolerates the iron method better than synthetics, but keep the heat low and the paper moving.

Chewing gum

Grease and oil

A synthetic rubber base — sticky when warm, brittle when frozen.

First response
Do not pull it. Pulling stretches gum down into the pile and takes fibre with it.
What works
Hold a bag of ice or a freezer block on it for 10–15 minutes until it is brittle, then shatter it and pick the pieces out with tweezers or a blunt knife. Clean the greasy shadow with washing-up liquid in warm water.
Makes it worse
Scissors. Cutting gum out leaves a bald patch that only a fitter can repair.
Pro verdict
Freeze spray and a gum remover clear it completely in minutes, including the oily residue that leaves a dark ring.

Nail polish

Dye and pigment

Nitrocellulose lacquer with heavy pigment — it sets into a plastic film around the fibres.

First response
Blot the wet pool without spreading it. Do not reach for the remover yet.
What works
Patch-test acetone-free nail polish remover on a hidden patch first — acetone dissolves acetate and some backings. Then dab, blot, dab, using tiny amounts and clean cloth each time.
Makes it worse
Neat acetone on a synthetic carpet, which can dissolve the pile itself and melt a hole where the stain was.
Pro verdict
Careful solvent work lifts most fresh polish. Dried dark polish on a light carpet often ends as a reduced shadow, and a small patch repair can be the better answer.

Wool caution. Wool tolerates solvent better than acetate, but the dye reduction still needs patch-testing.

Foundation and lipstick

Grease and oil

Pigment suspended in oil and wax — a grease stain wearing a colour.

First response
Lift the solids with a spoon edge; do not smear.
What works
Washing-up liquid in warm water to break the oil, blotting outside-in, then surgical spirit on a white cloth for the remaining pigment. Rinse with cool water.
Makes it worse
Water alone, which floats the oil outwards and doubles the size of the mark.
Pro verdict
Solvent pre-spray plus extraction. Very good results, including on red lipstick, which frightens people more than it should.

Mascara

Grease and oil

Carbon black pigment in a wax and polymer base, often water-resistant by design.

First response
Let it dry, then lift the flakes with the edge of a card before any liquid goes near it.
What works
Surgical spirit on a white cloth, dabbing with frequent cloth changes, then washing-up liquid in warm water to remove the wax, then a plain rinse.
Makes it worse
Rubbing while wet, which turns a small black dot into a grey smear across three inches of pile.
Pro verdict
Solvent spotting clears it almost always. Waterproof formulas take a second pass.

Fake tan

Dye and pigment

DHA reacting with any protein it touches, plus a cosmetic guide colour.

First response
Blot the wet lotion immediately — the reaction is still developing while it is damp.
What works
Washing-up liquid in warm water for the lotion base, blotted well, then a cool white-vinegar solution for the orange cast. Repeat lightly rather than heavily.
Makes it worse
Waiting until tomorrow. DHA keeps developing colour for hours, and a stain treated at hour one is a different job from hour twelve.
Pro verdict
Good reduction with dye-specific chemistry. On wool the DHA reacts with the fibre itself, and that part is genuinely difficult.

Wool caution. Wool is a protein fibre, so fake tan tans it. Treat within minutes or expect a permanent warm tone.

Dye and pigment

Oxidative dye engineered to bond permanently with protein fibre, usually with a developer alongside it.

First response
Blot fast with dry cloth, from the outside in, and keep the wet area as small as you can.
What works
Cool water and washing-up liquid, blotting repeatedly, then surgical spirit on a white cloth after a patch test. Be realistic: household kit rarely clears hair dye.
Makes it worse
Any scrubbing, and any bleach — bleach on a coloured carpet swaps a dark stain for a pale one.
Pro verdict
One of the hardest stains we see. Graduated reducing agents lift a good proportion; complete removal is not something to guarantee, and on a wool carpet a patch repair is often the better spend.

Wool caution. On wool, hair dye does exactly what it was designed to do. Call before experimenting.

Paint — water-based (emulsion)

Dye and pigment

Pigment in an acrylic binder that cures as it dries — the clock is the enemy.

First response
While wet: scoop the bulk with a spoon, then blot with cold water and keep the patch damp so it cannot cure.
What works
Cold water with a teaspoon of washing-up liquid, blotting continuously, working outside-in. Keep going until nothing transfers; dried emulsion will not redissolve.
Makes it worse
Letting it dry, and then scraping — you lift the paint and the pile with it.
Pro verdict
Wet emulsion comes out well. Dried emulsion is a mechanical problem: we can shave and reduce it, and sometimes a small patch repair beats the result of any clean.

Paint — oil-based (gloss)

Grease and oil

Pigment in an alkyd resin that needs white spirit, not water.

First response
Scoop the bulk. Do not add water — it will not touch it.
What works
White spirit on a white cloth, patch-tested first, dabbing with clean cloth each time. Then washing-up liquid in warm water to remove the spirit residue, then a plain-water rinse. Ventilate the room.
Makes it worse
Soaking the area in white spirit, which can dissolve latex backing adhesive and delaminate the carpet.
Pro verdict
Controlled solvent work with proper ventilation and neutralising. Dried gloss usually ends as a reduction plus, if it matters, a patch.

Glue and adhesive

Grease and oil

Depends entirely on the glue: PVA is water-based, superglue is cyanoacrylate, and contact adhesive is solvent-based.

First response
Let superglue harden fully. Blot PVA while wet with cold water.
What works
PVA: cold water and washing-up liquid while wet. Superglue: acetone-free remover patch-tested first, dabbed, then pick the brittle residue out. Sticky tape residue: surgical spirit on a cloth.
Makes it worse
Neat acetone on hardened superglue over synthetic pile — you risk dissolving the fibre alongside the glue.
Pro verdict
We match the solvent to the adhesive and work in small stages. Superglue that has soaked to the backing is sometimes best trimmed and patched.

Slime

Dye and pigment

PVA glue cross-linked with borax, plus a very determined food colouring.

First response
Scrape the bulk off with a spoon, working inwards. Do not press.
What works
Soak the residue in white vinegar for five minutes to break the cross-linking, agitate gently with an old toothbrush, blot, and repeat. Finish with washing-up liquid in warm water, then a plain rinse. The dye may need a separate pass.
Makes it worse
Hot water, which cures the glue harder into the pile.
Pro verdict
Vinegar dwell plus extraction removes the polymer reliably. Bright dye colours occasionally leave a tint that needs dye-reduction work.

Rust

Dye and pigment

Iron oxide — a mineral deposit rather than a soil, so cleaning products do nothing.

First response
Move the offending metal object and put a coaster or a felt pad under it before anything else.
What works
A dedicated carpet rust remover following the label exactly, patch-tested first. Lemon juice and salt works on light synthetic carpet with a 15-minute dwell and a cool rinse.
Makes it worse
General-purpose carpet shampoo, which can react with iron and darken the mark permanently.
Pro verdict
Acid rust removers used at correct dilution and properly neutralised. Almost always a complete removal on synthetic pile.

Wool caution. Acid rust removers can strip wool dye. This one is worth handing over rather than testing.

Shoe polish

Grease and oil

Heavy pigment in wax and solvent — designed to stay on fibre.

First response
Lift the solids cold with a blunt knife, do not smear.
What works
Surgical spirit on a white cloth, small dabs with frequent cloth changes, then washing-up liquid in warm water for the wax, then a plain rinse.
Makes it worse
Water first — it does nothing to wax and spreads the pigment.
Pro verdict
Solvent spotting and extraction. Good results, though black polish on cream wool can leave a faint grey shadow.

Bleach spots and colour loss

Dye and pigment

Not a stain at all. Bleach has destroyed the dye — there is nothing sitting on the fibre to remove.

First response
Rinse the area with cold water to stop the bleach acting on more dye, then blot dry.
What works
There is no DIY fix. No cleaner, spray or home remedy restores dye that has been chemically destroyed, and anything you apply is at best neutral.
Makes it worse
Buying another cleaning product, or cleaning the area repeatedly in hope — you cannot clean away an absence of colour.
Pro verdict
Honest verdict: cleaning cannot fix this. The real options are spot re-dyeing by a colour-repair specialist or a patch repair using carpet from a wardrobe or an offcut. We refer both out rather than sell you a clean that will not work.

What a professional can do that you can't

The short version: many fresh stains are absolutely DIY-winnable, and you should not pay anyone for a cup of coffee spilled ten minutes ago. Professionals earn their fee on set-in, unknown, large or repeated stains, and on delicate fibres where the wrong product costs more than the clean.

The genuine differences are equipment and control. A heated extraction rinse puts clean solution into the pile at pressure and pulls it straight back out with the soil, rather than leaving a damp detergent residue behind. Chemistry is used at measured dilutions with a proper dwell time, so it has long enough to work and is removed before it can affect the dye. Treated areas are pH-balanced afterwards, which is why a professionally cleaned patch does not resoil faster than the carpet around it — the single most common complaint after a DIY spot clean.

Beyond that: enzyme flooding at volume for urine salts, so the treatment reaches as deep as the urine did; graduated solvent work on dye stains, where the aim is controlled reduction rather than one aggressive attempt; and a spotting kit with tannin, protein, solvent and reducing agents in it, so a mystery stain gets three considered attempts instead of one hopeful spray.

Straight answers

The stains nobody should guarantee

Four categories are honestly beyond guaranteed removal, and any cleaner who promises them on the phone before seeing the carpet is telling you what you want to hear.

Set-in dye — old curry, hair dye, some inks and dark cordials — has chemically bonded with the fibre. Good chemistry reduces it, often dramatically, but the dye is now part of the carpet rather than sitting on it. Bleach marks and colour loss are the absence of dye, and no cleaning restores something that is not there. Cigarette burns and heat glazing are melted or destroyed fibre, which is a fitter's patch repair. And anything that has physically damaged the pile — heavy scrubbing, solvent burn, acid dye-strip from vomit — is damage, not soiling.

A quoted price that assumes every stain will vanish is usually a bait price that grows once the technician is in the hallway. The right conversation is the other way round: what will almost certainly come out, what will improve, and what will not move at all — before you book.

Fibre first

Wool and natural fibres — read before you spray

Wool is a protein fibre, which makes it behave more like your own hair than like nylon. Supermarket oxi sprays and high-alkaline all-purpose cleaners are formulated for robust synthetics; on wool they strip the natural lanolin, dull the surface, and can bleed dye out of one tuft into the next. Over-wetting causes shrinkage and felting, and cellulosic browning pulls yellow-brown compounds out of the backing and up to the tips as it dries.

The rules are short. Cool water, never hot. pH-neutral or WoolSafe-approved chemistry only, and no oxygen bleach. Keep moisture low and dry fast with airflow. Blot rather than agitate, because felting is mechanical damage you cannot reverse.

Sisal, seagrass, jute and coir are stricter again: they mark permanently with water, so the honest answer for a wet spill on a natural-fibre floor covering is to blot, absorb and call somebody who carries a fibre-identification kit. A dry compound clean is the only safe route, and it is better to be told what it cannot achieve than to find out with a bucket.

Know when

When to stop DIY

Three honest triggers, and if any one of them applies, stop and put the cloth down.

  • The stain is spreading, or it faded and came back a week later — that is wicking from the backing, and more surface product only feeds it.
  • You do not know what the stain is. An unknown stain treated with the wrong family of chemistry is the most common way a removable mark becomes a permanent one.
  • It is on wool, silk, a natural-fibre floor covering or an expensive rug, where the cost of the wrong product is far higher than the cost of a call-out.

Carpet stain FAQs

No — it is one of the most persistent myths in cleaning. White wine is also acidic and also contains tannin and sugar, so at best you dilute one stain with another and leave sugar in the pile that attracts soil for months. Cool water and blotting does everything white wine would do, without adding a second spill. If you want a household mix that genuinely helps, use a tablespoon of white vinegar and a teaspoon of washing-up liquid in 500ml of cool water.
