Long distance removals at a glance
The key facts most people search for, in one place.
What counts as a long distance move?
There’s no single legal definition, but in practice a long distance removal is any move where the distance changes the job — usually anything over about 100 miles, or any relocation that crosses regions, such as the South East to Scotland, Wales to Yorkshire, or London to Cornwall. Once you’re travelling that far, the move stops being a simple “two people and a van for the morning” and becomes a logistics exercise: route planning, longer transit times, more robust packing because your belongings are handled more and travel further, and sometimes an overnight leg for very long hauls.
That’s why long distance movers price and plan differently from a local crew. Done well, a cross-country move should still feel calm: one fixed price agreed up front, a clear plan, and the same team looking after your things from the moment they leave your old home to the moment they’re unpacked in the new one.
How much do long distance removals cost in the UK?
Long distance moves are usually quoted as a fixed price rather than by the hour. As a rough guide for 2026, the removal itself ranges from around £1,000 for a small move up to £4,200+ for a larger home across the country — with very large or fully-packed moves higher again.
Guide ranges only. Because long distance moving costs vary so much with mileage, access and timing, the only accurate figure comes from a free survey and a written fixed quote.
What affects the price of a long distance move?
Six factors do most of the work in any long distance removals quote.
Hidden costs to ask about
The headline quote isn’t always the whole story, so it’s worth asking what’s included before you book. Common extras on a long distance move include packing materials (sometimes charged separately from the packing labour), long-carry charges where the van can’t park close to the door, waiting-time fees if key handover is delayed, parking suspensions or congestion and clean-air charges in cities, and storage if your moving-in date slips. A good mover will set all of this out clearly and fold it into one fixed price wherever possible — at Hello Services there are no hidden mileage or fuel surcharges.
How a long distance move works, step by step
Four stages from first quote to a fully unpacked new home.
Free survey & fixed quote
An in-home or video survey confirms volume, access and destination, so you get one fixed, all-in price with nothing to add later.
Packing & protection
Full or partial packing with professional materials, furniture dismantled, wrapped and labelled ready for the long journey.
Dedicated transport
Your goods travel in a planned, insured vehicle with route planning and driver rest breaks built into the schedule.
Delivery & unpack
We unload, reassemble furniture and unpack at your new address, with one move manager overseeing the whole journey.
Part-load vs dedicated vehicle: which is right for you?
Choosing the right vehicle option is the single biggest lever on a long distance moving cost.
How far in advance should you book?
For a long distance removal, aim to book around six to eight weeks ahead — and earlier still if you’re moving in the busy summer season (May to September) or at the end of a month, when demand and prices peak. Larger homes and office relocations are often best booked eight to twelve weeks out so the right vehicles and crew can be reserved. Outside peak periods, between October and April, you can often book a few weeks ahead and pick up better midweek rates.
Whatever the date, start planning early. Give yourself roughly six weeks to declutter and pack room by room, leave everyday essentials for the final days, and book your survey as soon as your move date firms up. Short-notice and urgent moves are still possible — availability is simply tighter.
How to pack for a long distance move
Your belongings travel further and are handled more, so packing matters even more than on a local move. The essentials:
- Start 4–6 weeks early and work room by room, beginning with rooms you use least.
- Declutter first — sell, donate or recycle. Every item gone is one you don’t pay to move.
- Use professional-grade materials: double-wall boxes, bubble wrap, packing paper, wardrobe and dish cartons.
- Don’t overfill boxes; put heavy items (books) in small boxes so they don’t break or crush contents.
- Label every box by room, and pack an “open me first” essentials box for day one.
- Dismantle large furniture; bag screws and bolts and tape them to the item.
- Wrap fragile and antique pieces in padding or blankets, and stretch-wrap drawers shut.
- Photograph electronics before unplugging so you can reconnect them quickly.
- Keep valuables, jewellery, cash and important documents with you — not in the van.
- Keep a simple inventory so you can check everything off on arrival.
Prefer to skip it entirely? Our full packing service wraps, boxes and labels everything for you — ask for it on your quote.
What removal companies can’t move
For safety and insurance reasons, removal firms won’t transport hazardous or flammable items such as paint, gas bottles, petrol, oils or fireworks. Perishable food and plants are also usually a no, as they can spoil or spill on a long journey. Anything irreplaceable — passports, jewellery, cash, medication and key documents — should travel with you. And for the same insurance reasons, passengers can’t ride in the removal vehicle, so plan your own transport (and your pets’) for the day.
Insurance & choosing a long distance mover
The single most important thing to check is that the company is properly insured. Run through this before you book:
- Goods-in-transit insurance — covers your belongings while they’re being moved.
- Public liability insurance — covers injury or damage to property during the move.
- Cover limits that actually match the value of what you’re moving.
- What’s excluded — fragile items are often only covered if professionally packed.
- A written, fixed quote provided after a proper survey, not a vague phone estimate.
- Clarity on what’s included — fuel, tolls and insurance, so there are no surprises.
- Genuine reviews and a track record you can verify.
- Clear terms and conditions, and ideally access to an independent dispute-resolution scheme.
It’s also worth checking your home contents policy — many cover possessions in transit as standard, but usually only when a licensed, professional company carries them.
Change of address: who to notify
Start the admin about two to four weeks out. The key organisations to tell:
- Local council — both old and new, for council tax.
- Gas, electricity and water — take meter readings on moving day.
- Broadband, phone and TV licence.
- HMRC, plus your employer and pension provider.
- DVLA — driving licence and V5C logbook.
- Electoral roll, to register at your new address.
- Banks, building societies, credit cards and insurers.
- GP, dentist and your children’s schools.
- Royal Mail redirection as a safety net.
- Subscriptions and online shopping accounts.
- Companies House, if you’re a company director.
- Friends and family — easy to forget on the day.

Long distance removals FAQs
How much do long distance removals cost in the UK?
Most long distance moves are quoted as a fixed price. As a 2026 guide, a small move or part-load starts from around £350, a 2–3 bed home typically runs £1,000–£4,200 depending on mileage and volume, and larger or fully-packed moves can exceed £5,000. A free survey gives you an exact, all-in figure.
Is a long distance move priced by the hour or a fixed price?
Long distance removals are almost always a fixed price rather than hourly, because the job spans a long journey. Some companies also use a per-mile element beyond a set distance. The key is a written quote with no hidden mileage or fuel surcharges.
How far in advance should I book?
Aim for six to eight weeks ahead, and earlier in peak summer or at month-end. Larger homes and office moves are best booked eight to twelve weeks out. Outside peak season you can often book a few weeks ahead, and we handle shorter-notice moves too.
What’s the difference between a part-load and a dedicated vehicle?
A part-load shares space on a vehicle already travelling your route — cheaper, with slightly more flexible delivery windows. A dedicated vehicle is yours alone for a direct move with a fixed date and no transfers, which is faster and the usual choice for a full house.
Are my belongings insured during the move?
Yes. Every move is covered by goods-in-transit insurance for the journey, plus £1M public liability insurance. We secure and protect your items properly before they travel, and we’re happy to confirm cover limits in writing.
Do you provide packing and materials?
Yes. We offer full or partial packing with professional-grade boxes, bubble wrap and protection, or you can pack yourself and we’ll handle the loading, transport and delivery.
Can you dismantle and reassemble my furniture?
Yes. We dismantle beds, wardrobes and flat-pack furniture before the move and reassemble them at your new home, keeping all the fixings safe in transit.
What can’t you move?
For safety and insurance reasons we can’t carry hazardous or flammable items (paint, gas, fuel, fireworks), perishable food or plants. Valuables, documents and medication should travel with you.
Can I travel in the removal van?
No — for safety and insurance reasons passengers can’t ride in the removal vehicle, so please arrange your own transport for moving day, and for any pets.
Do you cover the whole UK and offer storage?
Yes. We move to every part of the UK mainland, including Scotland and Wales, and offer short and long-term secure storage if your moving-in date is delayed.
